currently have a 86 pick up with 22R that’s been bored .40 over, deck skimmed, head built and skimmed, bigger valves and springs, GM ignition conversion (Delphi DS ignition module and GM coil), 5 psi fuel pump with filter, Weber 38. i’ve been having problems with random ignition loss and i found a thread by a username of “irv” that suggested the Delphi module. installed today and vehicle runs great and idles fine but dies after throttle input (basically on decceraltion). it doesn’t seem like the throttle plate is closing all the way starving it for air, but it burps from the carb when it dies. any ideas or similar problems?
I just responded to the "irv" post but will address this as well.
Have you checked the air gap in the distributor pickup coil? Spec is 0.008 inch or 2mm to 0.012 inch or 3mm. I have mine set to 0.012 inch or 2.5 mm. You should also test the resistance of the pickup coil to see if it's in spec. Spec is 130 to 180 ohms.
Sometimes if the pickup coil is old (fatigued) it can develop some extra resistance once it gets hot, and what signal it can generate could fall off. It only generates about 5 volts AC normally, so any extra resistance will almost kill that low voltage down to near nothing, and there will be no voltage signal to the HEI module. If your issue only happens after the engine is up to full temp this could be the problem.
Weber 38 - 5 PSI is too much fuel pressure. It could be overpowering the needle valve & causing a bit of flooding/over-rich condition. Pull some spark plugs & check them for black deposits; if you find that you're running rich.
You didn't mention if you were running a fuel pressure regulator or not? If not you need one for that Weber 38. Webers work best on 2.5 to 3.5 PSI.
The Delphi module is a very good quality part, no problem there.
What kind of fuel pump, electric or mechanical? What is your base ignition timing? What octane gas are you using? Any black smoke or backfires from the exhaust pipe?

i honestly think it’s the cheap distributor from autozone i bought. i have the canister style SMP ignition coil, redid the air gap on magnet in the cap, changed plugs for NGK and they weren’t fouled, and cleaned carb. i did all of that this morning and still the same results. i think im going to buy the ProDistributor from LCE and try it. i really appreciate all the help dude. the facebook and reddit groups do not help at all.
and yes, i have a regulator tied it to the system running at 3 psi from an electric pump.
After doing a little online sleuthing, I think you may be correct. I see the Duralast/Autozone Part # as ADLG-TY47 @ $199.00. Looks like Rock Auto has the same part with a slightly different part number, SKDITY47, @ $71.79(!)
That one is SKP branded. That's Skyward Auto Parts based in Arizona. My info says they are "importers" so I'd suspect that distributor to be China made & possibly not up to standards.
At least the Autozone one has a lifetime limited warranty, so you could return it & get your money back. I always go with Cardone, either new or rebuilt. Have never had a problem with any of their parts, even the rebuilt units.
Cardone is a U.S. operation based in Pennsylvania and they still make part here.
You can go with LCE's ProDistributor if you want to. I think that their "Street Distributor" is the same as the Cardone unit, just with a different part # & higher price tag.
From the pics it looks like you have the SMP UC-15 coil, which is good. NGK plugs are excellent. Great on the fuel pressure regulator.
Glad to help if I can.
