85 2wd IFS help?

hey i know 2wd aint so popular but im workin on a baja truck and really im just wonderin wont the bar that go from the bottom of the a arm up towards the bumper are for? they look like a radius arm or sumthin? its an 85 with IFS on it and to me it looks like it just takes away the travel from the a arms? will any damage be done if i take it off? or what do i need to take it off? or can i even take it off? lol thanks

It's not really that they aren't popular, it's that most on here have 4x4's. 2wd Yota's are neat little trucks.

Sounds like your describing the stabilizer bar or sway bar. Doesn't hurt anything to take it off from 4x4's except that at higher speeds in turns the vehicle tends to lean over more supposedly making it more dangerous. (Was that a run on sentence? ) But, 4x's do have a higher center of gravity. So, may not notice it all on the 2wd. I say take it off and see.

Since I don't have a 2wd, I can't tell you what size the hardware is. But, here's the FSM procedure. Won't be the easiest job...

ya well i know what ya mean cause i have a 4 wheel drive but this thing just looks like its 4 bolts and bam its off so i guess ill take it off just to see whats gonna happen. it reminds me of a radius arm like youd see on i beams lol its weird..

hey... im a faithful 2wd owner, and love every part of my truck.... except for the fenders taht just got keyed.

Im too lazy to go outside and check my truck though

DO NOT REMOVE THE BARS from the front crossmember to the lower arms!!!!
You do not have a-arms on the lower suspension and those bars are the only things keeping the wheels from sliding under the truck.

You're talking about this bar right (goes from right of image to lower arm):


If you look close at the lower arms you'll notice they are are not a-arms and are only held on to the frame by one bolt and bushings so the tire end can shift fore / aft quite easily without the struts (those bars you're thinking of removing) to limit such movement.

anyhow. I think those bars are a 'little' more important than a vacuum leak.
would you drive your truck without any way for the rear axle to center itself?
would you fly on a plane that had a safety hinge on the wings so the wing would pivot to the rear (that's for the democrat party members out there- you'd have to ask yourself what if the left wing's engine went out, no?, causing the left wing to fold and a lot of lift on the right wing)....

the 2wd truck in my pic above has sway-away t-bars. (it's my wife's truck= sin91 on the forums)
honestly, you won't pull much 'travel' out of it unless you hit it with a hard bump and have somewhat soft shocks with quick jounce dampening. the sway-away bars are larger and stiffer than stock so they are made to take a high-speed impact.

well were doin extended a arm coil ocer and all but right now were just toyin with it. i was just wonderin cause on the aftermarket they dont have those bars and i didnt know why im not really a 2wd kinda guy. but ya

when you get into the serious aftermarket or custom baja trucks they won't have those arms since they will trend towards the 4wd"ish" pre-runner suspension which utilize a true lower a-arm.

Maybe I should quantify that Downey Off-Road has kits and they retain those bars but Total Chaos tends to lose them in favor of their own way to triangulate the lower arms.
