84-85 vs 86-88 ride height
Might be a stupid question but since I don't know of anyone around here with an 84-85 stock truck, but does the 84-85 SA 4X4 trucks sit taller than the 86-88 IFS 4X4 trucks? Just curious.
I know when doing an SAS on an 86-88 they will be taller though.

They're taller b/c I believe the front hanger locations are lower than 84/85 and the springs they use are for 84/85s.
BUT, you need that lift b/c the frame horns don't have the high(er) arches 84/85s do. So the axle will be closer to the frame on compression travel.
Which is why I'm not interested in converting to SAS from an IFS...
A simple 4" lift turns into 5" +
And not only would I get a lower CG from a 79-85 frame, but I'd inherently get more compression travel out of it as well.
Notice how good Defender's flex? That's b/c they have nice high frame horn on the front.

still confused. wasn;t asking if an SAS'd 86-88 was taller than a stock SA 85-86. I already knew that the SAS'd would sit taller. Was wondering if the stock SA 84-85 was taller than the stock IFS 87-88.
But I agree that is some insane flex. Not to hijack my own thread but those coil springs are not attached to its upper mount so when it droops it droops as far as the link/shock will allow it?

i could be mistaken but i think that 86-94s sit higher than stock 84-85s, ive been able to cram 32s on my 94 with plenty of room to spare and 33s on my 86 which sit good but i believe will hinder flex but the added traction (and $100 price tag for all 4) is worth it
every stock 84-85 ive seen seems to be craming 31s

Well, there's also the spring deflection from the de-arched springs
Funny story, I had an 85 I was working on one time and I had to jack the front end up by the frame...
I believe it spent a day or two in the air, axle hanging by gravity...
Anyways, finished up and let it down... It was a good 2" higher then when I jacked it up
But that only lasted a few days It sagged right back down...

^i still dont see how that works lol does it just work on the principle that the axle wont move back or forward and when the axle gets pushed back up itll just naturally go back into place?

Flip the image in the little pic over in your head...
Now bolt the black piece on to the coil, and the silver on to the frame.
As the black piece leaves the wedge, the coil spring is no longer connected to the truck.
As it comes back down in contact with, the wedge centers the spring so it goes back and is centered where it needs to be.
There are no coil forces pulling the axle up at full droop.

I would imagine so because it would just fall out on the trail and a passerby could grab it before you even thought about getting outta the truck.
