65MPH 3rd gear 22r 4WD
Hey guys I’m new here and I have a couple questions.
i have an 87 4WD with 32/11.50/r15.
I normally will go up hills in 3rd gear at 65-70 MPH.
only for 5-15 minuets at a time,
no tachometer and engine seems to be running high rpms.
I run synthetic royal purple engine oil and k&n filters all the time
havent had any issues with my engine yet it has 135,000 miles no engine work done besides I replaced the oil pump seal and front main crank seal.
just wanting to know if you guys do this speed with this type of engine often and have had any negative effects.

Gearing will also change what this means. Do you know if the PO regeared it? 32" tires fall into that grey area where half the people are dying to lower the gearing and the other half thinks it's ok. I decreased my tire size which has the same effect as lower gears (I went from 31's to 29's).
If you have stock 4.10 gears in the diffs, you're right around 4200 rpm at 70 mph. That's no problem for a healthy engine with good maintenance. 22re redline is 5750 rpm, and the owner's manual recommends shifting between 2000-4000 rpm.
I've revved to 5000 rpm in 2nd gear (49 mph with my gears and tires), with no ill-effects, just pulls hard and sounds real loud.

Also, like ^^ you need to check if P.O. re-geared.
