4wd problems
I recently did a 5 speed swap to my 1990 4runner but I can not seems to get the 4wd to work. The tranny/transfer case came from a junk yard but it did work. The 4wd switch that I have does work as well. I picked pins 2 and 3 from connector I4(6 pin conector) to wire the switch to but it is till not engauging. Has anyone ever had this problem before?

i had a problem with my 4wd and it was the shifter motor, but it sounded like it was working perfectly!
only after taking it apart i found that it was not actually driving anything, sure the motor was turning, but it wasnt driving the gears for the selector fork.
so just take a look at your t-case motor, there should be a small plate on the left side of the motor that comes off and exposes the gears and this should let you see if theyre turning
i can get a picture if you would like.
hope this helps

ok i got a few pictures for you, sorry there not very good, i was too afraid to take apart my tcase motor again
ill warn you now, the gear housing is full of oil so before you unscrew it and pop it off put a tray under it and not your face
ok this is the 4 bolts you have to unscrew (top right is under the cable) and i have put an outline of the gears in there.
and this is were the plate is located on the tcase and side of the motor.
And this is how to get the tcase motor off, there are only 3 bolts
but befor you go taking it all apart!, the tcase motor is very sensitive and the main gear is in a specific place because it has the stoppers on it which tell the 4wd computers to stop the motor when its in 4wd and out of 4wd so mark it and put it back together correctly, another thing is if you take the motor apart then do not turn it!!! it is spring loaded and you will not be able to hold it back, BUT if you do accidently pop it out then wind the motor so that you can feel the spring tension stop and the motor will try and pop back into place, you then have to push the brushes back so it can slot back in
hope this is your problem, mine was an easy fix, it just needed a grease and tlc
