Unhappy 4WD only engages when cold!!!

This is getting frustrating!

96 T100 V6 5spd with the ADD 4WD

Last winter I had no problems with the 4wd engaging at any time. This year, 4wd only engages when everything is cold. maybe for the first 15 minutes after startup. after that, the dash light wont come on, and the 4wd wont engage. I have to completely let the truck cool down for it to engage again. for example, after a 45 minute drive, and an hour parked in below freezing temperatures, no luck! overnight or 8 hours during work, and it goes right into 4wd.

Any ideas? I have searched, but only found total failures, not just intermittent problems.

Thanks in advance!

Did you ever get this problem solved?

I am having the same issue with my 96 4Runner SR5. You can engage 4WD no problem when the engine (and everything else) is cold, but if you try to engage 4WD after driving for 10+ minutes, it won't go.

After everything cools off after a couple of hours parked, 4WD will engage no problem at startup.

Yea, I replaced the VSV's for the ADD system. I found a scan of the service manual that tells you how to diagnose this, and changed around the vacuum lines as a temporary fix before I found them...

let me see if i still have the scan saved...

Hi Cody. I am just getting around to this, and I believe my VSV's for the ADD system need to be replaced, as well. I see used VSV's on eBay for $40. Where did you get your's and do you think that this is a safe and fair price route to go?

I haven't checked the part number, but the ones on eBay say for 1989-95 trucks, but they look identical to the 96 VSV's.

Thanks again for your help.
