4Runner won't stay running

1991 4Runner 3.0, 5sp, 4x4
It won't stay running unless I'm giving it gas. The battery/charge light is on. I have a brand new battery and both it and the alternator have been tested and are good. I've checked all fuses and fusible links, but nothing. I've recently put a new headgasket on it. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor. 40psi on the fuel pressure. The injectors and cold-start injector is getting fuel. Timing is good...I had recently discovered that the crank was off by about 2 degrees and the distributor was off about 2 teeth, which is why it now stays running as long as the accelerator was being pushed.

not to steal a thread...
calisurfer- i would check the ignition, and ground wires...(maybe coil if someone chimes in on those quirks).
or air leaks..
vacuum leaks....

just to add to this one..(and less posts)..as i too ( 88 4X4 3.0 vze engine) has the same issue..

starts up, and dies, just cannot stay running, but will start, and even drive 40 miles on a freeway just fine.

my perdicament.

went mudding,
Jump started another toyota (4cyl) that couldn't be jumped..tried about 15 minutes with jumpers on my battery, and me revving my engine...

than, went mudding, through deep waters...
even got it stuck in a big pond...(slick wheels, never died) drove it up a hill, and on dry land, turned it off...then, for no reason..just wouldn't stay running.

air cleaner is dry
oil is clean,

thinking its :
1- cap/rotor...(but why was it fine in the water)
2- brain (sits low on the passender floor, maybe got wet)
3- coil (a few friends say its likely the coil, but it does run...does a "bad" coil allow it to run, but not idle ? )
4- ignition ?? *( or ground wires maybe )

yea check all the hoses connected to the intake, when i did the ISR i had that problem, turns out one of the hoses was not properly connected to the intake.

mines resolved...

i re-cleaned the battery terminals, and checked the cap/rotor, but the 3rd thing (and probable the culprit) was the intake hose..

its like 3 inches, and theres 2 ports on the bottom (by the air filter), the lower, smaller (plastic) port had an inverted "V" in it, so it was not a perfect "O"...

hence truck thought i was driving downhilll/ in gear..and turned off the fuel to injectors...
...now purring again...

Calisurfer...hows yours doing ??
