4runner transmission problem

Ok, so we picked up a 92 4runner auto 4x4 that sat for 4 years, was told it had some issues with transmission slipage, truck will not move at all, it will do a very very slight lung going into D or R, (forward a tad in D and backwards in R) revving up doesnt do anything. When we first stsrted it up there was a metallic snapping sound, sounded like under the seat almost. did some digging into it and fixing bad work done by previous owner.. (shotty wiring, trans wires not hooked up, etc) no errors on dash (2blips/sec on od light/engine light during diag) tried manual shift test with no luck. Drained trans fluid, looked more like oil than trans fluid, dropped the front trans pan no metallic chunks, nothing on drain plug, small about of tiny metallic flakes in pan, cant see them unless u get the light just right and see the shine.. removed the converter shield and didnt notice any damage on the clutch

ive dug through the forums and fsm for info and my head is a bit dizzy from info .. any help in direction would be much appreciated..

"Metallic snapping sound"
That might be your problem. I don't know those autos, never owned one. Have had my fair share of Ford C6s though, and when they start slipping it doesn't take long before they're dead in the water.
If the engine runs, and the driveshaft turns by hand, it's probably time for a trans rebuild or swap.

thanka for your reply. Would it make sense that it did this in P? The front shaft does spin by hand in P. Not sure if that is normal. Just trying to check everything before dropping the while trans.

The front shaft should turn freely unless the transfer case is in 4HI or 4LO.
If you lift the rear wheels off the ground, you should be able to spin the rear drive shaft by hand in all positions except P.

Then you can try putting it in D and see if they spin under engine power. If not, or if barely, your problem lies somewhere between the crankshaft and the rear driveshaft.
