If I get the gears and locker installed this weekend I'd like to pull the top off of the 89 and wheel it. I've got the owners manual so I know how to pull it but am unsure if I can lift it off and carry it a few feet myself. I'm not a weenie but I don't want to drop it and jack something up, and my lifting buddy is out of town.

Is the top heavy? As in as heavy as a camper top for a truck or heavier?

The tops are pretty heavy, between all the fiberglass, metal, and glass.

I would not suggest trying to lift it yourself.

Two guys can do it, but you risk scratching your paint. The best way is to find 2-3 other people and lift it off very carefully.

 

Yes... It is pretty heavy. Although me and my girlfriend can lift it off fairly easily. Tip- Slide the windown open to create a handle to "pop" the seal, and then get a hand under the top and slide down to the center. The rear seems to be way heavier than the front. Well worth the looks you get in town though.

 

One could also swallow knifes, but that doesn't mean its a good idea. These tops are very heavy, and very awkward. Trying to be young and stupid is the surest way to injure your back and damage your truck.

 

Hey DC where did you get your tube doors? I'd like to get some once the truck is gone and I can park the runner in the garage.

Oh and thanks for the tips folks. I'll see if I can beer-bribe a couple other neighbors into helping me with it.

Thats basically how I do it. If you have a garage or car port just put some hooks in the ceiling (in the studs of course). Then take a couple 2x4's with eyelets screwed into each end. Run one of the 2x4's under the back of the top and run the other one through the open side window. Then take ratchet straps and connect one end to the hook in the ceiling and the other to the eyelet in the 2x4 (do this times 4) Now just lift it up using the straps.

These tube doors, with exception to the latch, are far and above the best tube doors I have ever seen. Nice and tight, good quality tubing, and excellent welds.

If they are no longer in business, its a shame. They build nice stuff.

Btw I got them powdercoated. Best idea ever.

The top is pretty heavy. Two people could pull it off fine though...maybe a third person with a blanket to make sure it doesn't get scuffed when you set it down, if you care about it.
