Pull the computer or ECM and make sure is dry.

Actually, if the ECU was under water, you need to take it out and rinse it with clean (preferably distilled) water and let it dry completely. WD40 all the electrical connectors.

ps, your in-law needs to fork out some cash.

X2. I'd be making him feel horrible, too.

Ok...
Got it running and clean. Bigger prob.
Thick smoke billowing out. It's white'ish. I've taken the muffler off, thinking it could be waterlogged. Nope. Still thick smoke.

BHG??

On idle it's just puffs sometimes clear/normal, on high/higher revs it's thick white'ish. Bad.

Is a BHG a problem that can occur in this situation?

What's weird, no coolant loss, or maybe, have not ran long enough (20 mins since I got it running).

But the thick smoke was there as soon as I got it started then revved over 1500rpm.

Coolant and oil look ok? Did you check for water in the cat?
Does the smoke smell sweet like burning coolant? If not, and if the coolant level does not go down, it's likely trapped moisture in the exhaust system.
That said, with the smoke possibly RPM dependent it could be a BHG or it's just taking that RPM level to get the exhaust hot enough to burn off the water.
I'd run it longer, while keeping an eye on the coolant level, to see if the accumulated moisture.

How do I go about checking for water in the cat?
I have had it on an angle, drooping down. No water running out.

Edit: cat bolts are seized. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.

Edit: it's now smoking on idle. BHG I'm thinking.
Might try to temporarily run some of that HG repair liquid, see if that stops it until my HG gets to the store.

Does anyone know of any guides to do the HG on a 4Y? I have a repair manual but it's too broad, covers too many diff models.

I can't find an FSM. The one I found though here was offline (taken down): 404 error.

I did the exact same thing to mine about 2 years ago and it was in watery-mud... Hydrolocked the whole thing and started blowing white smoke like crazy. But the white smoke can be because the HG is blown or you have water in your fuel. In my case it was a blown HG. It would be difficult for water to get into the tank i would assume because it is pretty well sealed, but still keep that in mind. I also tried the HG repair liquid and it unfortunately didn't fix it :/. It also started to smoke more and more as time went on. But if it costs $70 for the liquid and it solves the issue, it's obviously worth it. It all depends on how bad of shape the HG is in to see if it would work.

I have oily sparks.
Fresh sparks. Idling away, pulled them. Oil. Black tips and oily.
Still have THICK white plumes of smoke when revved.

probually going to have to change head gasket...doing that will also let you see inside and see what damage you might really have..better to fix it right than to keep chasing it...

Do not use the liquid HG 'repair' stuff....it generally only causes bigger problems with radiator, heater core, etc.

You pulled water into the motor and hydrolocked it. Luckily the compression isn't great in that motor and it leaked down into the oil pan. But, there is still residual water up in the cylinders. That is why its smoking so bad. Let it run for an hour or so and it will go away.

Then drain the oil again.

You're lucky you didn't bend a valve doing this. Next time it happens do NOT keep bumping the starter. If it doesn't turn over the first time, its locked, and you need to pull the plugs.
