4runner and small tires

hey, new member, long time lurker.

The other day i saw a 2nd gen 4runner parked and it looked kind of low for a 4runner. So i walked over to it (not right up to it) and took a closer look, but i couldn't identify any of the writing on the tires, but they looked smaller than 225's.

Is it possible for a 2nd gen to sit on tires smaller than that?

if so, whats the smallest tire you can actually put on a 2nd gen?

i'm sorry if this has already been a thread, i tried all the searches i could think of before making a new thread.

well the stock ground clearance is about 7-8"

hmmmmm the kuckles only clear the ground by what...5" so a 5" shorter tire than a 30" tire would be soemthing like a 20" overall tire before something started scrapeing.

perhaps a 20" tire on 15" rims you know, low profile 15" bling bling

That is the stock tire size that 2nd Gens. come with. The optional size is of course 31/10.50-R15

Stock base on 84+ was 225/75R15
83 and earlier was 215/75R15 I think.
Any tire that would go on a 15" can be run though, if you want. That would be something like a 195/45R15, which would be about 22" tall.... Silly looking to be sure!

Why would you want to go smaller anyway? 225's look tiny on 4Runners.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/quick-question-regarding-tire-sizes-4runner-52459/ see post 8... and if i am not mistaken he also wanted 225's cuz he felt they would handle better at speend 100+ MPH.

They call 'em meats because they are meant to be big, otherwise they are just wieners.

how would tires that small affect power, handling, mileage, and the speedo?

Most likely it would make the speedo read higher than the actual speed.

Make the mileage worse because you're gears would be too low for the small tires

It would give you some more power. and handling....well it would lower you're center of gravity, but you aren't gonna have much luck with a 4runner if you need it to be that low. Its not a porsche, so don't plan on drift racing, or running hairpins.

If you're gonna do offroad racing, it would be better to widen you're stance rather than lower it.

what if you had a 4runner with 22re work horse? haha

would your mileage still suffer or would that 2.4 actually benefit from having tires that small?

sorry to all you guys for asking so many questions, this stuff is just really interesting!

I still have 225's on my truck...... The owner I bought the truck from just put new tires on it a few months before I bought it from him. So until spring I am going to run these little things down a bit more. Then get some 31's or 33's. regear if needed. But thats the stock size without the big tire option.

"That small" - How small you talkin'? If you mean those 22inchers - well if all your driving was in town - period - then you'd get rapid accelleration and probably okay for mileage, but even a little highway driving would just suck the fuel. The rpms would be very high. Stock, if (and I dont' remember exactly so I'll just pick a likely number) if you turned 2600rpm at 65mph with 225s, the 22 inchers would have you turning 3300rpm - over 25% higher!
