Thought about that once, but isn't the roof line sort of have a hump over the extended part..which would make the mounting pads not sit flush?..I know the 96+ trucks have this raised part to the cab.

thought about doing that as well. can't really say i've ever seen it before so if you do it, let us see some pics.

my reason for the over cab rack is obviously to hold stuff, but i was trying to find a way to make lumber rack type deal without it being a lumber rack. this is what i came up with:

the safari rack goes over the cab and would have lights in it. the rest is based on those removable lumber racks - i think yakima makes them. the rear is removable and the front one has a pivot to swing up the spare tire carrier which will also hold a shovel and hi-lift. i might make it so the spare tire swings to the underside when it is in the horizontal position - this way i can put lumber across it when i go to home depot.

btw...how do those safari racks mount? do they clip on to the rain channel or do you drill holes?

When I wanted to do it I had a 91 regular cab, and the rack would have been so short, it would have looked more stupid than anything..I think the mounting pads would have made up most of the rack,...

yeah, regular cab might be too small, but i think it might be ok on an extended cab. will have to modify the mounts so that it sits level since the extended cabs have a slight hump.

A roof rack like that would cost you even more mileage-wise...

I know patrol cars lose quite a bit of accleration & top-end speed just with putting on lightbars... Something to think about...

It would be neat though. I have seen Yakima bike racks on mini-truck cabs before, and I think Yakima or thule make some kind of basket-thingy...
