4runner Exhaust

I have a 1990 4runner. stock 5 speed v6. i was wondering what is the best Exhaust System to get. i want better performance as well as a good deep sound. any links to sites that have more info would be great. been doing some searching but just wondering what you guys think are the best Exhaust Systems for a 4runner. any specs of how much more power (hp) gain you get from a Exhaust System would be great too.

Thanks!

by exhaust system to you mean cat-back or an accual full system? For headers check out thorley they should be avalible soon for purchase. for the rest of it it must all be custom work. Your local muffler shop could make you a cat-back system, as well as a new exhaust if you go with headers.

2.25 piping is the best to use with our motor. As far as mufflers go vortex cherry bombs are popular. I have a glasspack and a video can be found by searching.

with power you will notice a little gain from a cat-back and a pretty good gain from header back.

This engine is choked and helping it breathe better you will notice good gains

headers range from $325-570 and a cat back can be any where from $100-300

I'm in the market for new exhuast too and I'm considering this catback from summit. Can't beat the price ($95). You might want to look into it as well.

I have the Dynomax on mine and like it. The sound is pretty decent outside of the truck and it isn't obnoxious inside (no drone).

The price is decent - it didn't line up completely with the cat though.

If you did any searching you must have not gotten very far...

I could keep going but i thought that should be enough.

IMO theres really is no such thing as a 'best Exhaust System' for a 3vze....choices are loosely based on personal sound preference, cost and brands. Headers with the correct pipe size will make the biggest difference.

Nice price but only 2". I'd get a progressive 2.25-2.5 system, they seem to work really well.

is there really a prefered brand. such as flowmaster or Borla. i was looking on borlas website and they didnt have anything listed for a 1990 4runner 5 speed. yea i have also heard to just stick with something between 2.25-2.5. those seem to be the most used and prefered sizes.

I should probably give some more details on the progressive system. Some sort of Y pipe that comes together into a 2.25 pipe and goes to a 2.5 muffler and 2.5 out. Throw some sort of resonator or two in there wherever you want.

Borla & JBA have discontinued the 2nd gen catback
LC Engineering , Doug Thorley still make one as far as I know.
A vender here needs to do a groupbuy or have a sale

Supra,
You and I are definitely on the same page. I have a 2.5 cross over pipe that goes into a 2.5 high flow cat- that goes into a 2 inch cat back.

My experience with a 2.5 cat back was less than optimal. I lost considerable low end torque with the 2.5 cat back. Keep in mind that I am running headers. I opted to go with a 2 inch cat back, that has since yielded me respectable results. With my other mods, I will be more than happy to put my 3.0 up against any STOCK 3.4. - I will keep up, (at least).

As far as the resonator goes, you are right on the money. Creating a decent 'free-flow' sound out of the 3.0 isn't exactly easy. I have 2 resonators on, and it still sounds a little odd. I'm hoping the dynomax super turbo will quiet her down a little. As far as performance goes, I am honestly not concerned about the difference between 2 and 2.25.

curly,

if you've claimed to search, judging by your questions, you didn't get very far. and judging by your follow up questions, you didnt even bother to read much of anything after that. rocket was kind enough to list 8 or 9 links.

you need to search and read.
