Question 4Runner engine, speedometer, etc help

Hey everyone got more questions. A friend of mine has a 93 4runner 22re with an auto tranny. It started acting up last night on the way home. When the rig is in drive and you try to give it gas it’s like the brakes are on. The speedometer needle swings back and forth between around eighty and one twenty when it is not even moving and when you give it gas to try to move the speedo needle maxes out. It’s like the truck has two tachometers. We tried disconnecting the battery but it did not help. The overdrive light on the dash flashes on and off also. I was wondering if anybody had and ideas what it might be. I was thinking ECU, if it is the ECU, if you replace it does it have to be form the same year and trans type or can it be any computer from a 22re. Sorry for the long post and thanks for any and all help.

Sounds like you could have a short circuit. It could be the ECU but with a truck that old in NFLD it's likely a short. Happened to my '93 with an O2 sensor wire last year before I left St. John's. If you're in St. John's there is a great mechanic at Fastlane on torbay rd. who really knew his way around yota's (sorry I can't remember his name!). If it is the ECU I would guess that the replacement would have to be from a truck with the same tranny as it's electronically controlled - I could be wrong though. Good luck!

Forgot to say that may also want to see if the ECU is throwing any codes. if you haven't done it before just search for it on this site or check the Haynes manual under the EFI section. basically you just use a short peice of wire to short two terminals in the diagnostic port under the hood then count the number of flashes of the check engine light on the dash.

I remember reading If the OD light is flashing it is a Tranny code. Here is a link to the "Check engine" codes and how to pull them
http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/codes/

go to the fsm link here http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-buchanan/93fsm/ and check the trouble shooting section for the auto. there is another diagnostic terminal for the ect computer. just use a wire to stick in the terminal and touch it to a ground and the overdrive light will flash the codes. sounds like your speed sensor is bad and that will affect the transmission.
