470,000 1987 Toyota

First post.
Ok it's Finally time to replace my original 22R engine after 470,000 miles.
Hoping to get it to 500,000 but the compression is low and I am having to downshift to low on grades.
I have being using this truck since 1987 in my wallcovering business.
First thought was to have TNT auto in Oceanside rebuild mine. I have been using them since 1989. Thinking long down time. Want to limit the time without the truck.
Second is to have 22reperformance.com build me a stage two engine and have TNT install it for me.
Does anyone have a 22reperformance engine for a long time say 50,000 miles or more and can give me the feed back.
I like this truck a want to keep it reliable.
In the 470,00 miles it has only had one timing chain and the seals around the values replaced. Rest of the engine is original.
Thanks

Thank you Toyota! I'm hoping that's me in 10-15 years.

Very cool to read.

Wow - that's a great story!

I don't have experience with them, sorry - just wrapping up my first head gasket/head/cam install at 275K miles.

Have you thought about putting in the 5VZE V6 engine instead of a 22RE?

1987 Toyota 22R replacement

I want to keep it simply. Do not want to change the engine to a different model.
After 470,000 mile of service out of a 22R engine why change?
She only need to be towed once due to the ignition coil going out.
Main thing is never let them over heat and change the oil regular.
Mainly I just want a Reliable 22R engine.
It is easy to work on.
From what I have see the web. I thinking about having 22reperformance.com build me a stage two engine and have TNT install it for me.

Does anyone have a 22reperformance engine for a long time say 50,000 miles or more and can give me the feed back??

I have a custom built 22repreformance engine and have not had a single problem with it. Jim is a very knowledgeable and easy to work with owner of the shop. The problem is, they have about a 6 - 8 week lead time. If you know this going in like me, I had no issues. There are plenty of people that want quality at the snap of the wrist. I will wait whatever time needed for a quality built engine...but that's just me.

Sounds like your going to need to find someone else to get an engine from...

Thanks snobdds. I talked to Jerry by phone who installs Jim's engine and told me about 8 weeks lead time. I can make that work. Truck is running ok. This is a California truck. Freeway driving and level roads.

snobdds how many miles do you have on the engine?
I want a engine that will last.
I really liked your post with the photos. It is an investment and I just want it done right.
