4.88 Thirds from a runner

I have the opportunity to purchase 4.88's out of a runner to swap into my truck. It seams like this will be a lot cheaper than paying someone to setup R+P's in my diffs. They are a direct swap as far as I know.

With them out of the vehicle is there any way to verify (besides looking for glaring defects) that they're in good condition?

He wants $500 for both... Would you pay that?

I think it'd be an ideal time to setup a locker too.

Factory. Its a DD so that would be my preference.

Can you speak to some of the big differences?

A normal 410 3rd. The bore hole is recessed under the reference surface by about 1/4" meaning this pinion is spaced about 1/4" farther away from the ring than the factory 488 carriers.

$500 is too much for factory 4.88 3rds.

You can get them at my local pick-n-pull for $75 each.

I paid more than that for mine, but that was before I knew....

I just swapped in a set of factory 4.56 gears from a 92 4runner. $100 from the junkyard for the set.

I wouldn't think of paying that for 4.10's but there are nearly no yota in the local yards and 4.88's are pretty rare.

But good point all around.

Good info above. I have an open factory 4.88 front diff as an emergency spare for my locked unit that I got off of craigslist for $40. I have been casually keeping my eye out for a cheap, open factory 4.88 as an emergency drop-in rear spare. Looks like I would have wasted my money...
