ran 5:29's with 33's on my 85 22re 5 spd. 120k miles worth. great for off road but I very rarely used 1st gr on pavement and could take a 4.3 vortec chevy blazer through 3rd and most of 4th off the line.
I am going to go with 4:88's this time and 33's as I dont need to be ably to walk faster than my truck will go in first gear 4 low. although it was fun to do that every now and then just to make people laugh.
Ya thats pretty darn low, bet it had tons of torque But probably 4K @ 75mph ish uh?

So you prefer to be way to high geared? Why?
You actually like having to slip the clutch ALOT to start out on a hill?

Sarcasm dude. I can't stand 4.10's with 33's. I'm ordering 4.88's this month hopefully.

Thanks for all the gear /tire combo info guys! I was about to pick up a set of 4.88 gears for my 31's, but now I'm thinking 4.56 gears would be a better match. It seems like the 4.88's are much easier to find in junkyards, so maybe I should just step up to 33's. Being that I've got a 94 22re /manual IFS truck on 31's, are there any factory 4.56 vehicles I could keep my eyes open for and just do a factory gear swap? Thanks.

Well you guys have it good if you find them in junkyards, because where I'm at you're lucky to find a scrapped Toyota frame at my local junkyard... And even on Craigslist the only 4.88 gearing for sale that I've seen was an arb locker complete 3rd member and 4.88's. Not in my price range...

I was right around 4k at 75mph. just proving that the 22re can do all sorts of things that Toyota did not plan on like never running in the 2k rpm range. above 40mph. Great for wheeling. just wanted a trailer to get her there.

Just chiming in... 3vze 5 speed with 5.29 gears and 32x11.5 BFG K/Os. 4k rpm is 84mph for me... mileage used to be terrible, but I have leaned it out a bit. Now it gets 19mpg city, 22hwy (yes, corrected). Pulls most hills in 5th just fine, and jumps off the line around town.

I have it a little easier, as speed limits in Canada are a bit lower on the highways. I don't like putting it past 4k rpm, but it stayed there for TWENTY TWO hours straight coming back from California. No problems, besides losing nearly a quart of oil.

These japanese engines love to rev. Depending on what you want to do off the line, and mileage-wise... tough call. Having gotten familiar with my engine over the last couple of years though, I'd definitely get overgeared vs under. Besides, if it pushes you to get bigger tires...?

Times two. My 18-year-old 3VZ-E's bottom end has never been apart despite two head gaskets (one on recall and another my own fault). I've reved the piss out of it. Long trips to Nova Scotia and Colorado with 4:88s and 31 inchers -- taller auto overdrive gearing but still. Eighty mph is like 3200 rpm. Uses a litre every 5000 km.
