4.30 to 4.88 31 to 33
So I had 4.30s in my truck with 31s and went to a 33x12.50 and regeared to a 4.88 I normally like to do all my own work but I know nothing about gears so I had someone else do it but anyways.....What should I expect? A HUGE difference or just slightly better acceleration and rpm change? I get the truck back today hopefully and just curious to see what people have to say. Is there breakin on gears? I plan on driving nicely for 500 miles or so before I do any wheeling.

your results should be a bit lower than stock, thus giving you more pep off the line, but a bit higher rpm's are cruising speed. easy to calculate:
(old tire dia / old gears) X new gears = new tire diameter for stock feel.
(31/4.30) X 4.88 = 35's. but since you'll have 33's, you'll be slightly geared lower than you were originally...
yep with new gears, take it easy on the first 500. no punching off the line or towing or really hard acceleration. change fluids after 500 n you should be good to go! :great

Guy's he's also going to bigger tires. For the most part the two will cancel each other out. If you could tell no difference, the gears are doing the job - just putting bigger tires on without gearing would make it considerably slower.

4WD only autos are supposed to have 4.30s but I have them in my 5 speed for some reason, the rear 4.30s look good they got a little over 150K if you want them gimme shipping and 20 bucks and they are yours. I thought I had 4.56s also until I pulled up my axle code and saw that I had auto gears in my truck.

Hey chimike hows the locker in the front and open rear workin out for you? Ive never seen the front locked up and the rear not Ive been told that front lockers are a bad idea and I dont wanna start a flaming war about how they arent/are bad/good I just heard they arent the safest thing

Yay I got my truck back and holy moly it made a huge difference. Before I couldnt hit 70 downhill with a backwind and I can easily hit 75 and keep it uphill so it brought it back where I needed it.

What engine? If its a 3.4 probably not but it wouldnt hurt, 3.0s dont have the power to push 33s realisticyl without at least 4.56s i think but a 3.4 has a lot more power, if you have a 4 cylinder then a regear would probably be in good order

You'll notice a huge difference. I did the exact same change. I could tell as soon as I let the clutch out. I was at 3K on the tach cruising at 70mph with my 5 speed. You'll really notice a difference in 4Lo too. Have fun with your new found power. I think my truck went better after my 4.88 swap than it did bone stock. 4.30's suck.

Yah its definantly more streetable thats for damn sure. It cruises a little better on the highway also but I dont like the high rpms on the highway but its better then bogging it out the whole time not being able to get close to the speed limit.

really?... you do not take into consideration total total power train ratio that include rolling diameter of bigger tires.
