3vze won't start, CEL does not come on
I put my 95 4runner 3.0 back together after changing the headgasket. It turns over, but doesn't start. I haven't had time to do any diagnosis yet.
But I did notice that the CEL does NOT come on when I turn the key. I seem to recall seeing a thread saying that this meant something or other, but I can't find where I read this.
What does it mean when the CEL doesn't flash at startup? Is it a bad connection from the ECU? Or a bad ECU altogether? All the fuses look OK.

Take out the distributor and rotate the crankshaft one revolution and then put the distributor back in place. It was a long time ago that I rebuilt my motor and had that problem, but I believe the camshaft turns two revolutions for every one of the crankshaft. Correct me if I'm wrong someone!

check the bulb first, if its good then you ECM is not getting power, check the EFI relay and EFI fuse, make sure you hooked everything back up correctly, especially grounds

You could check the bulb, but I'd look to see if there are any blown fuses first just because it is easier and because the bulbs hardly ever fail. then if the fuses are OK, turn the key on and check for power in the diagnostic connector at the +B terminal. then if these check out OK you'll have to really dig into it.

CEL Not Lit
Devilman,
Did you ever find out why the CEL wasn't comming on?
I currently have an intermittant light on the CEL. The engine will turn over but not start.
Thanks.

Problem solved - very late followup
I'm back on these boards trying to fix my starter, so I figured I ought to update this thread.
My problem was the air flow meter. When I changed the head gasket, I unscrewed the 2 afm screws rather than uncoupling the connector. I crammed the wires back in without realizing I had torn a couple of vital connections.
And, of course, taking the afm out was like step 1 in the fsm, so I had completely forgotten about it by the time I got around to trying to start it back up.
There are some great posts on this issue. I soldered it back together and problem solved.
