$6500 seems a bit high. For that cost you'd be better off just have a 3.4 swap done.
If you have the tools to pull the engine and remove the pulleys (that's the hardest part I hear) it'll be way cheaper to do it yourself. But that's if you have the time and an extra vehicle in the mean time.

There are a few shops that do it... you might want to first try calling around your local area and see if anyone does it. If they've never done it before then don't bother (some shops will SAY they can do anything but don't really know what they are doing). I've not done this personally but other users have reported a few shops that have done the job for them. When my motor bites the dust (284k so far) that's the route I'm going to take.
If not, it takes a lot of time and some welding/sautering skills to do it right on your own. But for $6500... that's a lot of money to dump into a 23 year old engine. I don't think it's worth it personally, but it's your truck and if it means that much to you then go for it. Just know that even if it's "Re-man'd" officially, that doesn't mean it's problem free.
You could probably buy a 3rd Gen 4Runner (96-2002) with a 3.4L for less... see below as an example.

I love my Toyota vehicles and have 4 street legal to drive .
If I had only one I would think real hard about getting something a lot newer .
You do the engine fresh and strong what next transmission one of the differentials ??
That is fine if you can have it parked till it gets fixed if it needs to get done right now it gets ugly fast at least for me.

That's not too bad, that's what I was planning on spending. Though if a deal comes up for a 3.4L 4Runner, I think I'd sell my truck off. I'd much rather have a full back row of seats than the jump seats in my truck. I hardly ever use the bed, only for hauling around camping gear.

i wanted a pick up before but since i have a daughter i dont like the jump seat idea for carseats thats why i went with the runner. when its running again im gonna rip out the back carpet and bed line the back. but remember the more room you have you become the "people" hauler when off roading lmao my buddy has a 22re 83 single cab. but ill just stick with the 3.0 for now til saved alot of dough. my dream ideas with it :3.4,s.a.s the front and swap the 4 link rear to leaf,4 or 5 inch lift on 35s,lockers the works lmao one can dream
I also have to think about carseats soon... so the truck is becoming more and more unattractive. The only downside is I like the metal frame of the 89-95's... not too keen on having to deal with plastic and carbon fiber stuff on the 96+. But for now it's all good.

Yeah, that would be sweet! You should check out the user Texas Ace, he put a supercharger on his 3rd Gen 4Runner (just bolts on) and a methanol injection kit and he dyno'd it for over 240 HP! There's a user on here that did it in one of our rigs (2nd Gen 4Runner I think) and it hauls.
