3vze pinging nightmare

Hello everyone,

I have noticed that my 3vze pings on acceleration quite bad (unless I barely push the pedal). I checked the timing today and the mark was to the left of the 15. I retarded the timing to 12 BTDC and it almost seemed to drive worse. A lot of pinging and some hesitation in the 1600-3000 range. Then my power arrived at around 2700 and the pinging sort of disappeared. I then set it to 10 BTDC and the thing still pings, still has some acceleration problems. I'm honestly stumped. I did all the timing adjustments with TE1 and E1 jumped, and the damn thing still pings.
Should I go back to the left of 15? Should I retard it further?
Any other suggestions?

First and foremost you need to check for codes.

Well, my CEL isn't on now, but I do have 14 and 71 as stored codes.
I'm pretty sure I fixed the 71 because I used to have a cold idle problem, and my EGR vac lines were all screwed up. I put them in the right places and it ran normally again, aside from the pinging, but that was present before the fix.
Also, I set it back to 15 BTDC because the thing ran like trash at 10 (going up a hill the engine kind of stopped accelerating suddenly when the pedal was pushed down. Also just was a little jerky.) It still pings, but now my acceleration is smoother and there's not any bad hesitations in the 1700-2700 range.

I would pull the timing cover and make sure you didn't jump a tooth.
