really boring it out will only help so much, and I'm not sure how the cylinder clearance is.
The best thing for this motor would be to stroke it, we definitely need the torque down low and in the midrange.
Regardless, I just want to keep my 3.0 alive. It does fine for me with 5.29's on the trail, and if I want more trail grunt I'll get 5.71s. lol.

Try
However, I found my system on Ebay used for $100 on a $450 system. I like my setup. I did have to build my own coil wires though, and if you use an aftermarket ignition system you need to upgrade your spark plug wires to lower resistance wires. Accel makes good low resistance wires and also Magnecor wires worked especially well on my Subaru Impreza.

Stay with the 3.0. 3.4
3.4 is much more complicated. Buy the cheap headers on eBay. Full exhaust system $156. Build your own engine. Bore and deck heads and block, install head studs with MLS head gaskets. Regrind cam, and a stand alone engine controller that allows you to use a 3 inch full flow MAF sensor eleveating the air flow issue and tunable fuel curves. 200 hp plus.
