My cousin has a 94 3.slow that was bone stock this last summer and we took it up some nice sized mountains in Alaska. Didn't get the greatest gas mileage but it had enough guts. He's now added a jacobs system, gapped the spark plugs double normal gap, modified the air intake, put on a straight exhaust with glasspack (I think the glasspack sucks but thats my opinion) and took off the retarded running boards. Gets better gas mileage now, he boasts that it got 36 at 65 on the highway but I think he's full of it. Plenty of power though unless you're gonna try to pull a trailer full of your lifes collections from Alaska to Florida....which is exactly what we tried to do. We ended up getting our buddy to pull the trailer with his v-8 Seqoia. I just got a 95 4runner Limited but mine has an automatic transmission in it, planning on doing all the same mods to it as he did except I've got headers I'm getting ready to put on mine.
The 4 runner is like a big 4wheeler, its great for getting around, but its not made for pulling your stupid horses around to 4H clubs. Anybody that tries to make it do that is just stupid...go buy a sequoia or Tundra if you want that kinda power.

I put a electric fan on my 4runner. Little more power, smother shifting, and same cooling temp. at low speeds.

 

u guys should drive the 2wd yotas with the 3vz in them! there pretty quick if you just give it some air! i drove the 4x4 truck with a 3vz and man was that thing slow! i couldnt imagine how slow it would be in a 4 runner!

Here's the thing about the 3.0, at least from my perspective as a manual owner.

If this engine had another 5 to 15 HP, and 15 to 25 ft-lbs of torque down low (from 1500 to 3000 RPM's), it would be perfect. Not racy or anything fast, but it would make the truck a little more versatile and provide a lot better driveability.

 

Ive got em in the heads, the heads on the block, and just have to put everything back together!

 

Hey Bumpin - but I guess you won't be able to discern their performance difference when you consider the overall number of modifications you have undertaken in your build up? Perhaps you could comfortably ascertain that if guys with headers/exhaust/intake mods are getting this, and you're getting that much more, it must be the cams?

well this is true that im doing a LOT of modifications to my truck all at once, but the overall difference from OEM should be HUGE. Ted at Engine builder found that the 3vze would gain about 30 rwhp when one gave the heads larger valves, a good PNP, and headers. While I dont have headers I should gain about the same, or more from the cams. Im also trying to get a set of used headers currently....

Weasy2k did nothing other than to swap cams in his truck and gained across the whole powerband, BUT the dyno malfunctioned, so we dont have a good set of dynographs to go off of. He did however note a GOOD seat of the pants difference.

 

Yes I agree that my cousin's boast of 36 miles to the gallon is a bunch of horse˟˟˟˟˟. But the Jacobs system did make a difference for him on mileage, and I noticed after installing my system a definite change in how smooth my engine runs and a slight increase in throttle response. Mine gets 19 highway and about 15 city, even after everything that I've done to it. The 3.0 does not burn gas efficiently and a LOT of power is wasted.

 

what about boring the 3.0 out? anybody know of this?

 

Not worth it unless and pretty impossible if you want to go more than .06 over...
