Are 3vze Heads Interchangeable??

Are 3vze Heads Interchangeable??

Like the title said. I think I have a big problem. This rebuild has been a year long process so I have had everything (caps, bolts) in zip lock baggies labled for each side. I took them to the machine shop and dropped everything off and after a few days he called and said I had one cracked head, so I had him order a new one. Well when I got it all back all of my zip we in one box and he told me that the heads we all interchangeable. Well everything is now all together except for the tensioner pulley and timing set (i was waiting on them from toyota). When I put on the PS bracket I was a little confused because there was a gap but I was sure I was missing something and i would figure it out once I ran out of baggies. So are the heads interchangeable?? If they are then I need to make a spacer for the PS bracket which is no big deal. Then I will need to grind out the spot in the head were the tensioner bracket mounts.

On my 3VZE, the AC Compressor bracket fits behind the PS bracket, filling in that gap you are showing. Do you have a bracket for the AC compressor? Square looking bracket, 4 bolts at the 4 corners, Like this:

My AC bracket isnt close to the PS bracket. Do I have this mounted wrong??

No, I just went out and looked at mine and it looks correct. I need to look at the engine I have on the stand at the house to see what it is that goes there. I know something goes underneath that PS bracket.
Where is your half moon bracket for the bottom of the power steering front. It has one bolt hole that lines up with that, flush behind the bracket where the space is... I believe.

I think that bracket mounts on the front and is not sandwiched between the head and the PS bracket. I could be wrong, I didn't take very good pictures when dissembling this part.

I remember having to take off the PS assy and bracket once I had dropped the engine in, and I believe that it was because I had left this bracket off. I will look at the motor on the stand at the house when I get in later on today.

Thats what i thought thanks for the info. That bracket doesn't sandwich between the head and the PS bracket. So I still have the issue of a gap between the head and the PS bracket.

I just wanted to give you guys an update for anyone who was or is in my situation. I absolutely did put the heads on backwards, I referred back to my original pictures of my motor pull to verify. My options were to take the heads back off and switch them back or to grind out the area for the timing belt tensioner bracket to mount. I ended up not taking it apart, grinding the spot on the head and making a spacer for the PS bracket. The threaded hole was there for the tensioner but there was casting to close to the hole to allow for full articulation of the tensioner. Once I ground out the the area around the tensioner bolt hole i verified that it had free and full movement. I now have everything together and it runs like a top. It has been about 1500 miles of city driving, it has nice power for the 3slow, and sounds perfect. I have not done a compression check yet but i am constantly checking my oil and coolant to make sure nothing has mixed. I know that is not a sure way to check but i figure that i will put a few more miles on it and do a compression check. I am not saying that in all situations the heads are reversible but in my case it worked out (so far).

im having the same issue

ive had the same issues and im pretty sure i also had my heads mixed and the distributor wouldn't even go in all the way and had the same ps gap you had. and wondered but didnt know it until take it appart once again and do confirm they are not interchangeable.

The cams, and cam bearing caps are certainly not interchangable between heads. So........
The caps are line bored to their specific head and their position on that head.
The head castings themselves might well be identical, but different cam bearing caps are selectively fitted to left and right hand heads, and different holes might be drilled and tapped to match different needs.
Only the left hand camshaft has a distributor drive gear cut into it. The right hand cam does not have one.
