3VZE head gasket or Engine block swap

Hi,
It looks like I need to change my head gasket on my 1988 4 runner with a 3VZE engine. It has not had any other major engine work so besides re-machining the heads (since the engine will be apart) what other things should be done? Also if the list gets to big of thing to do, what do you think about buying a new engine block? Thanks in advance for any advise.
Steve

Do your research...get prices for a new block, then compare it to swapping in a 3.4. I'm actually looking at doing that myself, because a local wrecking yard has engines at $199, which is what a new head gasket, etc. would cost.
