3RD member Questions

3RD member Questions
I have an 86 4Runner that had a solid axle swap done to it, but the 3rd member has a bad pinion bearing and seal, also it was an automatic that was converted to a 5 speed so the gears are 4.30`s front and rear, so now my question is will the 3rd members from a 90-94 4Runner with a 3.slow be a direct swap into my 86 4Runner with out any modifications ?. what was the stock gear ratios for 90-94 3.slow automatic 4Runners ?, and one last question, can a 3rd member that was in the rear be swapped to the front ?.
Sorry for all the questions, im still learning about axles and gears and what will work and what won`t.

I dont know about a rear to front swap... I know it would NOT work with ifs.... Im pretty sure the auto runners from 90-94 came with either 4.56, or 4.88's...I suppose some may have had 4.30's... but I havent seen 1. Might be better to get 1 out of a 5 spd, I believe some of those came with 4.30's.

My 86 4Runner has a solid front axle, and is geared with 4.30 gears because it was an automatic, now it has a 5 speed in it, and as i said above the pinion bearing and seal are bag in the front axle, thats why i need to know if the 3rd members from a V6 runner will fit my runner, and i need to know if a rear 3rd member can be swapped into the front ?.

the rear from a 4runner of that era would go into the front axle of your truck. The front IFS differential is not compatible with any part of your system.
In regards to gearing, as far as I know, the only things that came with 4.30's were 22RE auto 4WD's.

any rear diff from 79-95 Toyota 4x4 will fit. Obviously a v6 one is more desirable but the 4.30 ratio is not a vey common ratio. Most 90 and up 4runner's with auto had 4.88's and used the offset 3rd member which means the gears can't be changed.
Yes the diff can be swapped from front to rear.

Well, my '91 3.0v6 auto came stock 4.56's, with 31" tires. There's a guy down from me has 2 '94's and a '92 with 4.56's.......and all 3 of his rigs are 4.56's

I can get you the numbers from my '91....but the guy down the way is outta town for a week, but his would be the same. I'll go get my number's and edit this post with them
A/TM G254/ A340H
G= 8"
25= 4.55 (4.56)....looked this up, 30 spline count
4= 4 Pinion
A340H = Tranny

Ok, im starting to understand this, but i still have a couple of questions, the 4 at the end stands for 4 pinion, im not understanding that part, and is the stock axle spline count in my 86 4Runner a 30 spline also ?. I just want to make sure the V6 3rd`s and my stock axle shafts will all work together before i spend the money and then find out they won`t.

I'm not sure for your rig. I think on 4x4wire.com there's an axle code chart, that lists all the axle codes for a gen's of truck and 4runners. Sorry I can't be much more help to you, but I don't know much 'bout gearing and stuff, yet.

You have been a big help to me, but i know what you mean, im trying to learn about gearing and things myself and its hard to figure out when you don`t know anything about it.

All 8" axles are 30 spline at the carrier.
4 pinion is the design of the V6 carrier. It's spider is cross shaped.
G144 is the 4.88 axle code IIRC, but as other have said the 4.88's are offset and cannot be swapped for any other gears. So if thats something you plan on doing go with the 4.56's...
Hope that helps

If thats the case, then I'm curious how the nieghbor down the way has 4.56's on his '94's? Unless I don't remember correctly. And he's running stock 31's....

The carriers sit slightly offset inside the 3rd member. In order to compensate, toyota made the ring gear thinner (i believe, it may be thicker). Regardless, no other toyota or aftermarket gear sets will fit into the diff. So, with those thirds, you must use the 4.88 gears.
The carrier is the same, so you can use any lockers for an 8" diff in there, but you can never put in a different gear set, unless you change 3rd members.
