3rd gen radio in 1st gen 4Runner
I saw on another board a member swap a dual head unit (CD and tape deck) from a 2000 4Runner into his 88. The PO of my 88 SR5 had installed a Clarion CD player. I decided that I wanted an OE look and option of a tape for my XM Radio Roadie.
The guy on the other board stated that it was a "direct plug-n-play" for him. It wasn't for me, and I was hoping someone on Yotatech could sed some light on my situation.
My harness has obvioussly been spliced to include the male plug for the Clarion, but it seemed like all of the original harness was still intact and hooked up.
I plugged the two male ends into the amp and then the amp (one plug) into the dual head unit (the dual head radio requires an amp). All I got was reverb.
So, do I need to find an OE harness? Might my amp be bad? Or am I simply missing something obvious because I'm a noob at anything audio? Any information would be helpful. Thank you.

OK. So there doens't seem to be much interest in this...I found an OE wiring harness on sale at toyotapartscheap.com for less than $10 (part no. 86203-89101) and I downloaded a wiring diagram from installdr.com. I'll give this another shot and hope that it works.

What you are doing sounds right. I found a vehicle side harness on eBay for about $6 and a stereo side harness there for about the same money. If your third gen stereo came with an amp the vehicle side harness will need to go into that and the amps plugs will go into the factory stereo. If it's the factory stereo that came with an amp the harness will not plug straight into it, besides it needs the amp. I traded factory radios in my '00 becasue the backlights quit working.
The "new" head unit broke after a couple of weeks.
The install dr link is very helpful. Be sure and actually ground your black wires to bare metal rather than relying on the harness. That is not stressed enough in the instructions and it can cause heart ache later.

On eBay, you can find just about any Metra plug you can think of. I've found both the factory repair harness and after-market adatper harness for every vehicle I've worked at "fixing" the previous radio install mistakes. Metra should also have the power-amps harnesses, both body and amp side.
Not sure, yet I'm seeing that the '00 unit has an external amp, while the '88 has an internal amp. Is that correct?
Either way, I'd rip out and rebuild the factory harness in the '88 back to factory, then build a custom external harness using '88 adapter and '00 wiring-side harnesses. I'd be sure you can start from scratch on the '88 side, first.

If you have the stock speakers you still need to hook up the amp wire (rear speakers have their own amp) I know because I have an 87 w stock speakers and an 01 head unit. You will not hear anything if you skip this step. Let me know if you need more help.
