33's and a '91 Runner Auto... Gears?????
I've got my LC coils and BJ spacers installed already... My runner came stock with the 235's ( I think) not the 31's, and no tow package. Anyways I am putting some 33 X 10.50's on it and I am about 70% on the highway (Atlanta) and need to use the O/D. I am trying to decide what gearing I need. I have talked to people running 4.88's but they say that the power is sh** at high speed... I want to run about 70-80 on the highway. So right now I am looking at 5.29's. Is this the right gear? Also I found this on ebay:

i have been hearing that if you want to maintain overdrive, witch mean that we have to be cruzing in an rpm rang with some power so above 3000rpm and 3ith 33's 5.71s would be the best way to go being at 3100rpm at 75mph according to a calculator that someone used to tell me this info.

Yep - manual transmission 33's = 4.88
Auto you could MAYBE do 5.29's if where you live is flat, but if you want to be able to hold the overdrive, then I think 5.71's would be better.
My truck is 33's, manual, with 4.88's and it is at 3000 RPM at 70MPH. My g/f's truck is on 35's (SAS), auto, with 5.71's and it won't hold the O/D on anything remotely uphill or with a headwind. She's at like 2200 RPM at 70MPH IIRC.

Search before demanding that someone answer you. This very subject has been discussed a zillion times if not more on here.

Auto 33's = 5.29's... many prefer lower.. 5.71's are getting hard to find. None of the wheeling crowd wants them because the pinion gear is so small and tends to snap in half during hard wheeling.
I would steer clear of used junk when it comes to gears. Buy a set of high quality ring and pinions, a good master install kit and have somebody that really knows what they are doing set them up. Regearing is not cheap.. period. I have $2000 into my current front and rear thirds alone. I spent $1200 the last time I regeard to 4.88's. If you can't afford to do it right my suggestion is leave you truck alone.

I have the same setup w/ stock 4.88's. I'm going with 5.29's after my SAS because I'm keeping my 33's. I live in Kansas so everything is flat as hell.

Interesting how everyone says 5.71's are weak because of so few teeth on the pinion, but that 5.29's are OK.
Both have 7 teeth on the pinion.
IMHO, 5.71's have got a bad rap because of bad installs. The lower the ratio, the more critical the install is. There's a HUGE difference between 4.88 (8 tooth pinion) and 5.29/5.71 (7 tooth pinion).

A few things to keep in mind:
A 33" mud tire will become a 32" tire well before its bald, so if you're the type that runs a tire until its bald maybe the 5.29s would be better. Also some brands of 33" tires aren't really 33" to start with, so measure the tire height and check it for yourself.

sure was mr. goat thats for the info! i have 32's with 4.88's and im only pleased with it on flat with no wind. what is it like havin 32's with 5.71's? i didnt quite figure out that calculator you sent me.

The calculator is easy once you use it a time or two. Just select the "A340H" from the list of trannies already programed in (there is a drop down list where it says "enter your own numbers") On step two select "Toyota with 2.66 low" The rest is obvious except you need to re-hit the calculate botton after every change.

4:88 yukons. Get 'em cryo'ed by bobby long though and use a solid spacer. Trust me you can't go wrong. And you shouldn't drive over 70mph anyway, it's not a great idea in a truck that's geared for four wheeling and big tires

I have 4.88's and 31's in my A340H runner and I would suggest the 5.71's for 33's. I won't run a 32" tire with 4.88's on this truck. I live in San Diego and it is most definitely not flat here. That coupled with high freeway speeds demand the lower gearing.
