3.4 Swap Options
After researching and following some great threads on 3.4 swaps here on YT, I had a few questions remaining. I am thinking of trying to find a salvage truck with engine, tranny... all that. I have a 5spd and wish to have a 5spd after the swap.
1. Why do most swaps seem to retain the older tranny? I have a 5spd, and it seems to make sense that I would want to get a 3.4 plus the tranny it came with (less miles, etc). Do most retain the old tranny to save money, or is there a compatibilty problem with the newer tranny?
2. A 3.4 from a Tacoma, 4Runner or T100 will work, correct?
3. A 3.4 from a 2WD will work for a swap, correct?
4. Will a 2WD 5spd tranny from a 3.4 allow a transfer case to be mounted to it?
5. Anyone know if the adapter Marlin sells to mount a gear driven case to the 3.0 will work with a 3.4 tranny?
6. Anyone know the best way to buy a salvage vehicle? What does one need to participate in the auctions? Best source for salvage vehicles?
Any input welcomed.

i'm pretty sure that you can hook up a 3.4L to the 3.0 tranny only if its a 5 spd. so your in good shape. if its an automatic you can still do it, but it needs something else to mount it together.

Plus, the newer tranny has a longer input shaft, so you have to use the newer bellhousing. Doing that means the slave moves from the pass side to the driver's side... and some more work.

Incorrect. A340h is a bolt up to the 3.4... but it really needs some internal upgrades to handle the new power. Search for TEamShiftPoint on YT.

keep the 5spd
I converted my 93 (3.0 / auto) to a '98 3.4 and a R151F (from an 87). It would be sooooo much easier for you to keep your 5spd due to console differences, shifter boots, clutch pedals, trans mount, wiring, etc. This is what I have to fix in order to mount the shifter boots (That's the Tcase shifter- you can't even see the trans shifter). I had to buy all that crap, and down here in NE FL, we don't have 'Toyota' yards to pick from.
Whatever you do- get as much as you can from the donor truck. It'll be worth that extra few hundred or so, as down the road, you can sell what you don't use.

Thanks for all the input... very helpful.
Rockota, my plan is to run dual cases. In fact, I may get the dual cases first and swap the 3.4 later on, thus trying to make sure what differences between the 3.0 and 3.4 might give me trouble.
