the diffrence between the two other then flywheel and clutch size ( note that the two share the same spline cout thus allowing you to use ether the 3.0 clutch or the 3.4), is the drop of the transfer-case, in a 89-95 5speed the drop is on the passenger side on a 96+ its on the drivers side, so if you plan on keeping your rig a 4x4 you will need a 89-95 v6 5speed, you can go with the 96+ but you will need to change the drop of your frunt axle, if your looking to do an sas you could go with a dana 44 or a dana 60 ,( i think they both have a driver side drop but dont quote me on it). hope this helped

Ok. Does both transmissions have the transfer case built into them?

the 5speeds are not built in to them they can be unbolted, as for the autos you need a special adapter to do dual t-cases, if thats what you mean, unfortinitly a passenger drop t-case off of a 89-95 5speed will not fit on a 96+ 5speed, ive tried.

if its a 3.4 i would do some more research, Ive herd some mixed reviews about swapping the trannys , that is without rewiring the whole motor and changing the ecu's, if its a 3.0 then you shouldn't have a problem. what motor do you have?

the 3.4 has the slave cylinder on the driver side. The 3.0 has the slave cylinder on the passenger side.

This cannot be done on the Tacoma due to the front diff being on the drivers side.

You have to find a 3.4L transmission. If you buy the 3.0L trans, you effectively bought yourself a 150lb paperweight.

What if you SAS it with a toyota axle? Then you could use the 3.0 trans right? Would it bolt in and work?

Yes, i suppose that could be done.

I see your point and raise one more point!!! If he is just trying to swap to a 5 speed, finding a donor truck with all the correct parts would be cheaper than swapping in the wrong trans and SAS'ing the rig

Done mean to hijack but since its a similar question I thought it would be better to ask it here than start another thread.
Would a 3.0 5 speed bolt up to a 96 4runner with a 3.4 automatic?
