3.0 staggering

Hey everyone, so i just bought a 1991 ex cab 4x4 with the 3.0 and every once in a while in third and fourth gear between 2000 and 3000 rpm it will stagger until 3100 rpm and then it will go away for a while. I was going to change the plugs wires and cap but from reading around this doesn't seem to fix the problem, alot of people say its their TPI can someone explain this to me.
thanks

Do you mean TPS (Throttle Position Sensor)? I'd check for any engine codes FIRST.

Is that the ONLY symptom you have?

A good tune-up is of course a good start. How long since the last one? How many miles on the engine? Has the O2 sensor ever been replaced?

So far thats the only symptom concerning the Engine/tranny. Every once in a while it will stagger while accelerating and then around 3100 it will shoot off.It has about 179,000 miles and it doesnt look like the O2 sensor has ever been changed.

The only other problem is that the steering wheel shakes sometime when I brake, I looked at the steering and it looks like the bushings on the idler arm are worn out. Not sure when its had its last tune up but i am bringing it in for one in the next couple of weeks.

lots of things can cause shaking during braking, bj's, tierods, idler arm, bad rotors, etc

So it turned out to be a bad O2 sensor and all of the problems seemed to have gone away after we installed the new one

i had a similar problem. my truck i bought used to runn great during the day. but at night it would miss like crazy. so i figured out that at night when it misses, i turned off the lights and it would purr. came to find out that the ground wire from the battery terminal to the inside of fender was hanging by like 1 strand. replaced it and i was good 2 go!
