OMG, tooker out on a run last weekend. me, son, clothing for two days, ice chest, canvas bag of tools, chovel, axe, 10x10 awning and some misc stuff, going from Murrieta to Victorville and got about 8-MPG. could not get over 50MPH on cajon pass. she's a slug. Not sure about a 3.4 swap in California, is it legal? even if it were, I would like to flat tow. I may have to dump the Runner next year and get something a little better on gas and flat towable...

If your runner is doing that bad, you have a problem. Try a tune up, new 02 sensor and better exhaust. I get 20mpg CITY in a 95% stock 88 3vze. All ive done is a 5speed swap, efan, free flow exhaust, and messed with the intake tubes a bit. I have my timing set to 13* too, im going to set it to 15* in the near future. I have factory gears, and exhaust manifold-crossover. I also have 31x10.5 tires, mt's if it makes a difference.

Edit: i also have egr, pair, and hardline delete.

just did both 02 sensors, next will be the tune up. plugs, wires, etc... i wonder what better gas will do? 91oct vs 87oct? would like to do exhaust and K&N filter soon. just being careful as not sure if I should keep it or not. I can say one thing, it has not left me stranded. but then I really haven't had a vehicle that did, I'm a Chevy guy and they have not let me down either.

Also, had Engine light come on and off in the last few weeks. checked it out, can't remember the code#, but had something to do with missfire, maybe this is telling me I need a tune up?

"i also have egr, pair, and hardline delete"
what are these items?

I wouldnt waste your time with a fpik, it draws air from the hot engine bay, the factory setup pulls cool air from behind the headlight. I got rid of all those other boxes, and just have the main air box. Make sure you dont have code 52, the knock sensor. I had that, and got horrible mpg. The egr and pair are those big stupid valves attached to the plenum and exhaust manifold on the passenger side. Basically all it did was free up engine bay space. I have a thread about it, its in my sig, i can add more pics if needed. You can also search egr and pair removal. Exhaust made a big difference for me, i have a half cored cat and a summit street and strip muffler(flowmaster 40), all 2.25 in piping and it made a big difference.

Cool, I will search for the EGR / PAIR removal. just got done screwing with the code 52 thingy. I did the relocate on that till I do an intake removal. may never do it. also, take a look at the exhaust, may be clogged cat...

Ya theres no way your runner should be getting the right mgs's

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Power...WD&srchtyp=ymm

Ya thats just to weird

Please just realize it already. Buy a ford if you want to learn what bad mpg is all about, I drive one often, its bad, just figure it out so you can stop thinking the way some of you do......

Don't waste your time. In CA you will need both of those to pass smog.

Also, when getting it smogged set the timing to the default setting (10) to be safe. Mine barely passed emmissions when I had it smogged, but thats because the goofball I had just bought it from had advanced the timing to 25 and I didnt think to check... Afterwards advance it to 15 - 17 if you can do so without getting a knock. I have mine at 16 and I consistently get 17-18mpg with manual tranny and 32x11.5 mud terrains, otherwise stock engine/drivetrain (and I live and drive in a mountainous area)
