The light is out. Maybe just the bulb.

If there are no codes it will blink about 2x per second. That is the all clear.

Also, without TE1/E1 jumpered, with the ignition in the ON position (truck off) the CEL should be ON.

No CEL when you turn the key on to ignition even without the jumper? It's possible it's just the bulb, but it can also mean a bad ECU. What confuses me, though, is that in your first post you said you had a code 52. Which is it, brohem?

That link I posted for the codes.....I don't remember how I came across that. Maybe in a google search. But, that's been somewhere around 10 years ago. But, yeah....my first reference for codes always. Explains exactly how to do it and to watch and differentiate between one and two digit codes. Important, that is.

Those bulbs do go. Can always pull the instrument cluster and swap a working bulb over.

So does it come on with ignition ON, without terminals jumpered?

Well, here's what you can do otherwise. With the motor running and up to temp, jump the diagnostic terminals TE1 and E1. You should notice a drop in RPM. If you do, then it may just be the bulb. But, like I said, if you're having severe voltage issues, I'm tellin' ya...the ECU's not going to be happy.

Okay....I think we need to establish some clarity because it seems to me you are confusing what's being asked of you.

First, you have a CEL. Under normal conditions, the light is supposed to come on when you turn the key to ignition. This tells you that you are getting adequate voltage to the ECU and that it's powered up, and it tells you the onboard diagnostics system is functioning. The CEL coming on at this point, under this circumstance is normal. Again...it's suppose to, but only a steady on. It will not flash. Then, once the vehicle is running......under normal conditions....it's suppose to go off.

However, when you are being asked if you are getting a code, this means the CEL has come on under abnormal circumstance. IOW, while the vehicle is operating. The OBD center is informing you of a malfunction. One of the electrical operating systems that the ECU is getting feedback from is out of specification. It knows this by the amount of voltage it is or isn't receiving from any given system.

So, if you say "I think I'm getting a code 52", how else will you know this unless you've jump the diagnostic terminals, the ECU has entered the OBD function, and you're getting a specified number of flashes from the CEL meaning it is in fact coming on though you're also saying it doesn't? Is it working only intermittently....the light, that is?

Ok In my 3 years of owning the 4runner I have never saw the check engine light ever! I bought it for 800 dollars with a blown hg I replaced the motor.I no that dint take care of it at all so they most likely bypassed the cel somehow

Not sure what you mean "bypassed", but in the typical sense of the word you really can't do that.

So, no CEL. Then how do you conclude that you are getting a code 52? A CEL is the only way do that in lieu of a diagnostic scanner.
