3.0 blowing smoke

Alright guys i went to check my oil the other day and it was 2.5 qts low! I still had good oil pressure tho. Also i noticed my 4unner was blowing a decent amount of white smoke( i guess from the oil being burned). The reason this is such a suprise to me is the motor is a remanufactured engine with only 10K miles on it. I just changed the oil and it still smokes. Any ideas on whats wrong or how to fix it instead of having to ship the engine back for repair? its a 3.0 automatic tranny. also i had to remove the honeycomb in the catalytic converter because it was almost clogged, a new cat should be here in a few days.

[EDIT]: There has been a fairly loud, ticking/chattering sound from my engine for a few months now and a little bit of oil has always been dissapearing. could it be a worn valve guide?

the coolant hasn't moved a drop. the smoke smells burnt like oil and is a greyish color. i know its burning oil but is there any way to stop it? the engine has an unlimited mileage warranty to protect me against stuff like this but i can't see being out of my truck while i have to pull the engine, ship it to oregon, wait for him to fix it, and then ship it back and then put it back in.

I don't think so Kyle. It sounds a bit beyond some simple fix, that sucks dude but at least you have a warranty on it.

hogie:
If you did the head job on a high mileage motor that will happen. You will blow the rings in 6 months.

That or the guides/stem seal's are bad. Believe me, I have had people do stuff like that before. Rebuilt an entire engine and replaced everything every thing but the stem seals/knuaral. Chevy 350 last time.
