when i'm around 3-4k rpm, i can smell ammonia in my cab.

I never smelled it before my SAS. when we did my SAS, we hacked my tailpipe right at the muffler, so i'm assuming this is to blame.

To rid myself of the smell, do i need to have a turn-down or some sort of tail-pipe put on my exhaust, or is the cat toast?

How strong is the smell and what exactly did you hack off? I know that if you cut the pipe off right at the muffler and turned it down it really wouldn't make much of a difference. except maybe at higher speeds, the wind might catch it. Have you noticed hesitation or anything that might lead you to believe your cat is pluged?

the smell is strong enough that i'd like to figure out what's up. My truck is running great. I haven't noticed any hesitation or anything.

I bet its radiator fluid, I know my truck does this sometimes.

high rpm's uses ur water pump more thus more pressure on your hoses. and if your hoses are old they may leak a lil. Look around for leaks. Park in one spot and revv high and see if there is any radiator leakage.

Antifreeze is a sweet smell. "ammonia" is not how it would be described. But then again, I can't think of anything that would smell like that. Catalytic converter smell is "rotten eggs," unburnt fuel (with no cat) smells like fuel, excess oil smells like oil... Is a cat peeing on your rig at night?

But the exhaust being left underneath is NOT a good idea. One day you might wake up dead, carbon monoxide is sneaky and painless...

Could possibly be refrigerant leak, if you have air conditioning. Friend of mine used to work at a dairy. He could smell the ammonia-type odor when their refrigerants were leaking. It's worth a look.

it's definately not antifreeze. i know that smell all too well. Plans are to add a tailpipe after i get my rear bumer finished so i can figure out all the plumbing.

I do have air conditioning. I can smell the ammonia even when the A/C is off ( i hardly ever use the AC in the first place). My air is still blowing cold too, so i don't think it could be this, but how would i go about testing for a refridgerant leak?

There is an dye you can add to the a/c lines that is supposed to leave residue at a leak source. Of course, this 'could' not be it at all, but it's another place to look. It appears you have ruled out many of the other, likely sources.
