3.0 to 22RE Swap Economical?
So im pretty tired with my 3vze it gets bad milage, its noisy, its making a ticking sound, it seems like im just waiting for it to start overheating because im paranoid not to mention its slow.
My friends think im crazy but I really want to put a 22re better milage, easier to work on, lighter, and RELIABLE. My friends say my trucks to heavy it would still get bad MPG and be slower. Im thinking with some gearing and maybe a few engine mods it would be up to snuff(enough anyway) They also say i should stop being an ass and buy a first gen as I would be paying about the same.
So im thinking I would be stocked with the result after its done as i lean toward to 2nd gens. Ive look around this and many forums I havent seen a complete list specifically for a 3.0 swap.So what else would I need for this swap im thinking if I can somehow get everything around 3000 it wouldn't be that bad of a idea.
1.Engine
2.Trans
3.Wiring harness
4.Computer
5.Air intake assy
6.air flow meter
7.Exhaust system (all)<<<<all??
8.Cooling hoses and entire cooling system
9.Misc things like belts, etc
10.Crossmember????
11.Anything else
bad idea? the truck itself only cost 1800, id really like a 22re in it.I dont really have enough for a 3.4 swap.

gonna have to switch motor mounts and a lot of fab, would be more economical to go 3.4. honestly i know how money is tight, i know mine is, but make it easy on yourself. you can find a 3.4 for a tad bit more than a 22re and its a HUGE improvement, or so ive heard.

Seems like you would essentially be swapping out all of the guts of the truck. You may not forsee alot of other things that may not fit, like driveshaft lengths, etc. Plus all of the engine accessories.
Here's an idea: the turbo 1st gens had essentially the same transmission as the 3.0's, and had a special bellhousing to mate the 22ret block to it. Try and find a turbo bellhousing and then you would *only* have to worry about engine compartment stuff, you could keep your trans and stuff. Plus, the trans that came behind the 3.0 is stronger than the W56 behind the 22re so it would be pretty cool to keep that.

Like ozziesironmanoffroad said, the engine mounts that are welded to the frame would have to be cut off and rewelded in a different location. I dont think that a 22r would be that much better. With less horsepower you would have to use more throttle to reach the same speed, using more gas. I went from a 22r to a 3.4 in my truck and would never go back.

Well i need to do something eventually
Alright so roughly adding it up
-------------------------------
Rebuilt 3vze
-----------
www.engineplace.com-$1495 ($1995 -$500 core charge) +$200 shipping= $1695
-------------------------------------
5vze(3.4)
----------
Rebuilt Engine- $2895 with core charge(roadmasterimportengines.com)might be able to find a better deal,
What else would it need, I hear theres a kit I can buy but the search fails me
----------------------------
22RE Swap(Very Rough help appericated)
--------------------------
1.Rebuilt Engine-$1200(average from craigslist ads
2.Trans-$1500(from marlin, might find a better deal somewhere)
3.Wiring harness-???
4.Computer-???
5.Air intake assy-???
6.air flow meter-???
7.Exhaust system (all)<<<<all??
8.Cooling hoses and entire cooling system-$200 Radiator(Various places)
9 .Misc things like belts, etc----around $100
10.Crossmember????Do i need it
11.Power steering pump-$83.00(autopartswarehouse.com)
12.Power steering lines-$81.00(autopartswarehouse.com)
So far that already costs $3164 and thats not including the stuff with ? marks and the ones that I havent thought of yet
anyone know a place online that carries items like that or average prices they go for.
I think after doing a little research ill just buy a rebuilt 3.0 and just buy a header that doesnt wrap around for some ungodly reason near my head gasket. Surprised me though that getting a 5vze might end up being cheaper then forcing a 22re in there even though I wish I could afford to. I really say im up in the air about this, plus ther might be a chance i could score a rebuilt engine/trans combo on craigs making the 22re swap almost not be a as my friends would say "terrible waste of money"

you will get a little more mpg, but not a significant amount and 2nd 4runners with 22re's are slow as . not really worth it IMO but if you are set on doing it you would be best off finding a wrecked pickup/4runner with a 22re and pulling the stuff you need out of that.

i have 2 gen 2s with 22re and 5 spf.. the one with all the options and a/c is slower and gets worse milage than my never rebuilt no option or ac trail rig which is faster too!!
i LUV my 22re there slow but i dont drive my yotas for speed.. I DRIVE THEM BECAUSE I CAN GO THROUGH ANYTHING!

Find a written off Taco or 4Runner with a 3.4. I'm sure you can get all the parts you need for under $2500. Check this link https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...der-2k-141638/
My 3.4 gets better mileage than the 3.0, I'm running 33" tires and can climb hills far more easily than the 3.0 on 31" tires. Minimal fab work, especially when you compare it to the 22RE.
And the poo eating grin you get when you nail the throttle with a 5VZFE engine is priceless!

My truck is going from a 3VZE to a 2RZ-FE(2.4). I have all the parts from the donor truck except the motor mounts which will be fabricated. When the 2RZ goes in, I have an R151F turbo tranny and dual ultimate crawler that will be going in at the same time.
