2wd gearing

Not sure where to post this but I've got an 87 2wd p/u (sig) and I am curious about the differences are between the little 1 ton differential (out of the old 1 ton pickups) and my truck. Basically trying to up my gearing like I would for bigger tires on my 4runner, except I won't be adding bigger tires to the pickup. Just to get some added towing strength would be a "nice to have" item. Probably would be a little bit faster in the low gears as well, granted I won't have any top end in 5th gear.

Y'all understand what I'm gettin at?

I believe all 1 ton 2wd trucks used the 8" carrier with 4.11 gearing. I'll have to check my brochure when I get home.

4wheelparts has listings for both 7.5 and 8 ring and pinion sets in ratios from 4.11 to 5.71
I went to www.4wheelparts.com and entered your vehicle information, then searched for ring and pinion and got this page: http://www.4wheelparts.com/Drivetrai...5092&t_pl=2225
scroll towards the bottom of the page, and they're all listed there, and all are $133.95 except the 7.5" 4.11 which is 165

and you'll have power at the top end with lower gears. it'll cut into your top speed.

I wonder what gearing I already have, it may be in the owners manual. This truck is fine as is, I just want to make it a little bit stronger. I figured the 1 ton chunk would be a little heftier. I suppose I could get new ring and pinions, and it may be the better thing to do, but I would almost rather wait and find a little 1 ton someone's parting (yeah right) and buy the whole chunk. I appreciate the link, I'll have to check which size diff I've got.

you could probably contact a dealer in the morning and give them your vin and get the 411 on what you have.

I don't think I can, I called them about a 4runner I had and gave them the vin number and they told me that there was no way to tell by the vin. Idiots....

I think I can find it in the owners manual, if not I'll just give her a few spins up on the jackstands and see for myself.

maybe it's a georgia thing? I mean, if a dealer can cut an ignition key with the vin, why can't they figure out what gears are installed?
lol

they only carry vin numbers for vehicles up to 10 years old. to get another key cut you have to take the passenger door panel off and get the code off the lock cylinder...

Sean, look at the code stamped on the plate in your engine bay and you will see GXXX get those numbers and follow the link someone else posted on here.

The 1 ton rear is basically the 4wd 8" third members. If it is a single rear wheel then it is a 5 lug with 8" goodies. I got one out the yard which was a single rear wheel which has the code G662 which is 3.07 gears. It has 30 splines and the same rear brakes as the 2wd 1/2 ton so if you are going to drop a V8 in it or something with more horsepower, use this rearend.

hah, I wish I could drop a V8 in it, but this baby's stayin a 4 cylinder! No sense in making my DD a gas guzzler. None the less, this is what I wanted to find out. It is a 5 lug, not sure what you mean by a single rear wheel.

The number is GB41, it's the only thing that starts with a G on the engine compartments vin plate.

got a key for my 91 about 4 months ago using the VIN.

some 1 tons had dual rear wheels- flatbeds, rv conversions, etc., semi truck style. and are 5 lug but a different pattern, IIRC.

Ahh, okay. I knew they had duallys, I thought he was talking about an open diff, which would be equipped on every stock truck.
