i was wondering how hard it would be to convert my 92 2wd pickup with a 22re to a 4wd pickup. i have a trannny and t case ou of an 85 pickup with a 22 re. Im assuming i would have to add a crossmember, axles is there any thing else i should watch out for i know the computers are different between 2 and 4wd is that somethng i would have to worry about . im pretty sure the frames are the same i don see why they would be different.

In theory if you added your new tranny + t-case and did say a sas. You would be fine, the only thing I dont see working is the 4x4 light in the dash.

 

one thing- does the 92 use a mechanical speedo cable? I know an 85 does, but if the 92 used the electrical signal, you'd probably be better off finding a newer tranny/t-case. Otherwise sounds like a reasonable undertaking.

 

U bolt flip kit in the rear, if you go solid axle up front, that simplifies things a ton, but I've seen two 2wd trucks converted to 4wd with IFS. spindles are different, 5 lug verses 6. Not sure on the gearing in the 2wd rear ends, may be better off just putting in a rear out of a 4wd truck.

But one thing people always forget about is the power steering gear box. do some searching on that, but the 2wd is a push-pull type, and the 4wd is some kind or another (I forget )

oh, and Marlin sells a converter for electric to cable as far as a speedo goes, so thats easily taken care of. though I believe it was 93 up that had electric speedos.

I totally forgot about the rear axle.

I would get a donar rear axle from a 4x4 ifs, that way you have a 4 pinion diff and spring over axle perches.
