my problem with the stock links is i can't get much travel out of them, and they're weak. i'm in the minority on these forums, i like to run my truck around the desert at high speeds, hence why i break stuff a lot leaf springs will be a cheap solution for me to get more travel out of my rear end.

The links don't limit the travel. Molly's truck flexed like CRAZZZY with the stock links, long shocks, and FJ80 springs. IMHO, it does not flex as well since we swapped it to 63" Chevy's.
For high speed, I would definitely want the link suspension. Redoing the links is the same or less work than doing the leaf swap if it comes to that.
Check out "Chaplain"s 3rd gen dezert build - rear suspension is practically identical to 2nd gen.

I know mines a 3rd gen, but one of mine broke due to rust. I inspected the other 3 mounts with a flashlight and mirror(on a hoist as well) and noticed some of the steel was quite thin, so I just went and got a used low mile axle housing for 300 bucks. I was lucky because the elocker diff is a lot harder to find. The new axle housing looks really good and came from a 99.
Edit: I drove my truck pretty hard for about 2 months before I replaced it.
