1ST gen 4runner cabin leaks?

Our 1986 4runner continually gets wet inside when it rains. The carpet is rotting and the floor will eventually. Now we see the glovebox is also getting wet. An earlier (1985) had major electrical problems due to this same scenario. Anyone have a clue as to ow to fix this? It seems that the water is coming in through the cowling about the windshield wipers and vent area or maybe the windshield itself. Has anyone else had this and what the heck do you do about it? Pulling the fenders and cowl doesn't give any real access to try to caulk or seal anything.

those years are a 1st gen runner BTW..

When its getting wet on the inside, at what spot is that?

Sorry, I still think of the straight axle versions as 1st gen. Anyway, it fills the whole footwell in a hard rain. We ran a garden hose over and around it and the water flows down the inside firewall on either side in front of the respective kickpanel, at least as best we can tell.

oh so its a big leak.

I personally won't mess with glass, in either fear of breaking it or it not sealing right.

maybe call up a glass shop and see what they would charge to reseal it..

It really seems like it it's from below the glass under the vent cowl...could be wrong!

On my old 86 pickup, I had to have the winshield re sealed because in hard rain, it would leak in through the bottom right corner and leave a puddle on the floor board..

Def. scout around for a glass shop, if re-sealing the windshield don't help we can start over...


but hey, look at the bright side!
at least your not leaking at the seam for your back end!

This may apply-
on my 87 I took out the wheel well liner and found some weld cracks where the cowl ledge drain was.
From the inside of the vehicle, pull back the firewall sound deadener insulation and look at along the seam welds for cracks. i caulked mine inside and out and that seemed (pun?) to help.
This is most likely a fatigue/vibration/shock induced problem that is common.
