22re valve cover grommets

If you tighten the nuts the hold the valve cover on to tight and smash the roubber grommets does it make the valve chatter louder?

Yes, if you tighten them too much the rockers will strike the inside of the VC and make it "Bookoo loud"

I've heard of it happening, but never encountered it myself

If you have valve chatter just adjust your valve lash no matter how loud it is]. I wouldnt think the grommets would make any noticeable difference

Two things I noticed after getting my rebuilt back: 1) Excessive chatter after three different valve adjustments 2) Valve cover grommets appear "smashed."

Any trick to changing these out?? I'll be glad to be the guinea pig!

Alright, looked up torque specs, supposed to be a measly ~5.5 ft lbs. I'd be VERY surprised if the smashed sandwiches under those acorns are torqued only to ~5.5 ft lbs, or new with the rebuild. Gonna order new ones tomorrow and install correctly. Will report any change/improvements.

You probably didn't need new ones. Just back the nuts off and tighten them until they are somewhat tight.

I tightened them too much way back when I used to know it all and disregarded FSM instructions.
I fired it up and it sounded like someone had a BFH and a punch inside my ear tapping like there was no tomorrow.

So tightening then too tight can cause lifters to hit the inside of valve cover causing bookoo noise. will that mess up the Valve cover from lifters hitting it?

very possible the 5.5 spec is just over hand tight if they even look crushed they are most likely too tight

Changed 'em! The were crushed, alright! I'm guessing they were the originals reused. Sure to guess that it'll not weep a small film of oil, and the acorn nuts were definitely overtightened. Won't know about knocking, etc. 'til I drive it tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

Dammit, I think I did this when I installed the valve cover after doing the timing chain. I installed three new grommits (the forth wouldnt fit into the valve cover) and I thought I torqued it to spec, but couldnt tell. The rubber just cept compressing... bah!

I hear a chatter under load, this this is it???

Jay, it could be. I know that when my buddy pick up his '88 pickup it was CRAZY loud. The motor had had a full rebuild on it. I loosened up the nuts on the valve cover because the motor shop that did my rebuild had warned me about that. It made a HUGE difference!!
