sorry trying to understand, and im really just curious, the pcv valve opens at certain times to allow valve gasses through to intake, but the other hose is always "open" and comes and goes to/from the same places so it seems like the pcv wouldnt do any thing when closed or open because the gasses would just take the path of least resistance... thanks
So, the rear is always seeing a vacuum relative to the front, and because of this a "flow" of fresh air is produced going from (filtered) breather => valve cover / crank case => PCV => intake plenum. This is what accomplishes the emission control and oil vapor evacuation goals of the overall system design.
A secondary feature of the front tube is if the PCV valve (which is specifically restricted by design parameters) cannot handle blow by past the rings, any extraneous pressure in the crank case can be vented out of the front tube as well... think of it like a crude "blow off" if the PCV itself is overwhelmed. In both cases the gases go back into the intake plenum and are re-burned.

Might as well bring it to life one more time. So! Not knowing anything about anything I previously ran breathers on both holes. The one for the pcv made my engine bay an oily mess. So now I have it ran to the intake like it should. However, now realizing that the oily mess is being dumped into my intake, I am going to plan on getting an oil catch can. But my question is, the way it's currently setup with the pcv running to the intake, and a breather on the front hole. I feel a good amount of air blowing from the hole near the oil cap. Is this normal or should I be worried? Also since it has been a couple years does anyone have any new opinions on this thread?

I run an Edelbrock breather on my valve cover. I had the valve cover machined in the front (larger opening) to facilitate the installation of the new breather; I run a stock PCV valve. I have never had any oil on my engine. If you look at my photo album, MY TOY, you can see the installation of the Edelbrock breather.

Another necropost
if someone like me just acquired a 22r with a non working egr/smog system and it runs like a champ. And I was planning on removing it for the shear fact of cleaning up that side (hate vac hoses). And removing that funky vac splitter on the side of the intake and plugging it where would the pcv hose attach?
i also noticed that I have a bad oil leak and I have tracked to the egr valve. I’m guessing the busted tab never got a bolt when put back on. I was told the motor was rebuilt. Is there a possibility these bolt holes connect to a oil passageway?
