22RE Troubleshooting?

I bought a 95 P/U with 60,000 original miles. When I changed the oil the cap had a slimy foam under the oil cap. I didn't notice oil in the antifreeze or antifreeze in the oil when I changed it. At 60 K could the timing chain already be rubbed through or do you think maybe it s a headgasket. How would I troubleshoot this instead of tearing it apart and throwing money at somthing thats not the problem. TIA

In the winter if you don't drive it far to completely warm up the motor, for a while, lots of motors do that. If you drive it 30-40 miles a day on the freeway, it shouldn't be there.

Change the PCV that might help and costs little.

Also it should go away again in the summer.

Thanks! Yeah work is only about 5 mins away. My coolant leval was low but I flushed it when I bought it a few months ago so it may have leveled out a bit. I'll keep a close eye on it.

Yeah that gunk in the oil cap is common in the winter.

Adjust your idle speed between 750-900 RPM's. Anything above 950 RPMs, and the computer goes into "fuel deceleration cut" mode and that’s when the varying idle occurs.

Check and adjust your TPS. They go out of adjustment after years of use.

Sounds like you have the typical temperature gauge overshoot problem. Here's a link on how to eradicate that problem with an updated thermostat.

I had the sludge stuff before as well, just wipe it off and see if it comes back.
I also had coolant issues, but since I replaced the rad cap with one from the dealership all seems well. It had some cheap aftermarket one on it.
