22RE ticking problem

I've looked around before I asked, but I just cant find anyone who had the same problem as I so. My 22re in my 87 yota is ticking, but only around 2000 RPM, any lower it doesnt, and any higher it doesnt. Its not that loud, just a slight ticking. What could this be and is it easily fixed?
Thanks

Its really difficult to determine without actually hearing it. Could be valves, but they usually tick at lower rpms, could be injectors, but you probably couldnt hear them at 2K rpm. My guess is an exhaust leak. Could be a number of other things. Try to determine where its coming from, ie, bottom, top, driver's side, passenger's side, exhaust, etc.

I went outside and checked it again, and it sounds like its coming from the bottom somewhere, I cant tell where though. Does this mean exhaust?

Bottom of the engine?
Can you tell if it is more prevalent on either side or the same on both?

Do you have enough oil?

I would say valves as just a guess. It wouldn't hurt to adjust your valves anyway. It is really easy if you go buy a nice feeler gauge with an angle in it. While you are in there you can take a peek at the timing chain guides.

On my truck the fuel injectors make a small tick at idle. And I have just a little valve noise at idle as well. Usually by 2000rpm it has smoothed out. I am stumped. Does anyone think it could be bottom-end?

Have you changed your oil recently? I swear my truck made more noise after a recent oil change. I didnt use my normal brand of oil and now I am thinking it had something to do with it.

22re's are noisey egines

if I've ever heard valve chatter on a 22re, it's LOUD... not like a slight tap for some reason... at least from what I've seen, lol.. it's like, there's either no valve train noise, or it's OMG THIS THING'S RUNNING?!?! kinda loud

the injector's, they're crazy loud too for whatever reason, on some vehicles more so than others. I never knew mine were so loud untill I fixed my exhaust leak

exhaust leaks are pretty common too and can cause the same ticking noise; mostly around the point where the manifold and the down-pipe meet. there's 2 fiber doughnut gaskets there that I went through 2 sets a month untill I replaced the setup with a header
