22RE Throttle Body Cleaning
1994 Pickup 22RE
The truck seems to idle where ever it wants to. I can almost get it to idle where I want to by keeping the RPMs in one spot for a couple seconds and thats where the truck will idle (nothing crazy just around 600-1200 RPMs). It sounds like I need to clean the Throttle Body, did you guys take yours off to do a thorough job? Or just clean it with a towel, screw driver, tooth brush, and some throttle body cleaner like it says in the Tech section?

the right way to do is to take the TB off, but it can be cleaned with it still on the motor. I took a can of carb. cleaner and hosed in down with butterfly open and then stuck a rag in there and wiped in down(need a screwdriver to get the rag pass the butterfly). did that like 3 or 4 time to clean it as much as I could. BTW I used too much carb. cleaner and the truck run alittle rough for around a min. when I started it back up.

Another thing you should check is the dashpot. The dashpot eases the throttle down when you let up on the accelerator pedal. If it isn't working properly, you'll get the symptoms you describe. The dashpot is cylindrical and is right below the throttle body, looking from the passenger side. If it is the problem, you can remove it without any ill effects, or replace it.

I always take a q-tip and dip it in clean motor oil. I then lightly lube the butterfly on both sides where it pivots in the throttle body. Sometimes it will stick a little down the road if you don't lubricate it.

I cleaned it earlier today (didn't take it off) and the truck seems to run better. We will see soon if it really does. Would removing the dashpot keep it from passing emissions?

Its fuel injected, no dashpot as in what a carburetor has, or am I off my rocker?
You don't wanna go spraying carb cleaner into that with the TPS on the TB, or you will have to buy a new TPS

The rubber on my dashpot is screwed. I didn't know I could take it off without any ill effects. I was going to look into another boot for it.
I have a fuel injected truck and have a dash pot. I will take a picture and post it later if it will help ya. I can also take some shots of the FSM.

manual trucks have dashpots, automatics do not. I know this is an old thread but just wanted to make that clear in case anyone visits years from now like I did haha.
