22RE Teardown Gotchas??

I am tearing down my spare motor. I have everything off except the crank. What is the procedure? Are the main cap bolts machined to work on that cap or they can go in any cap? I know the caps are specific to thier positions. So i will mark them accordingly. What about the piston connections? ARe they specific also? What on the motor do i have to keep together that are machined together? Any other things that may be important to know? I see there is a plug with an allen head on it on the bottom of the motor inside the oil pan area. Do i that off, or will the machine shop need it on?

thanks

number the rods along 1 side of the engine so they go back in the same order facing the right direction. same with the mains. bolts don't matter. remove all plugs before sending out for hot tanking. remember to install all plugs when it goes back together. I use permatex #2 around the soft plugs and on all threaded plugs. hopefully you diagrammed the bolts coming out of the timing cover. there are many different sizes and lengths and they need to go in the same hole. somewhere on the net is a photo with the bolt length's marked. I googled it two weeks ago and found it.

I had a mess with them timing bolts last time. Fortuantely i will have all accessories on the other motor ready to just swap over so i wont lose them yet. Gonna take my pics. Does it matter is you push the pistons out the top or down the bottom?

It onlys matter if the crankshaft is still in place. Obviously..... it would be in the way.

I've always taken them out the top.

You have to install them from the top, your ring compressor will need the block surface to square up against when you install them.

OK, odd thing i noticed. THe main caps have already been nubmered, so that is nice. But the piston rod caps are also nubmered but, there are three labeled "2" and one labeled "3" Not sure how dependeant these are. I can make notice and run the same caps to the pistons but i think i am going to go ahead and get all new pistons and such to keep the engine as new as i can get it. I am guessing there will be new caps to go with the connecting rods?

New pistons don't come with new connecting rods.

If you are buying new connecting rods they will come with the caps.
