22RE startup issue

22RE startup issue
I have a 1988 22RE and I'm trying to figure this out.
The first time I start it for the day, especially when cold, the check engine light will come on and it will kinda sputter like the timings off or something.
If I feather the gas a little for about 5 seconds, the light goes off and it runs fine.
If I turn the key to ACC first and pump the gas pedal 5-6 times and then start it, it is normal, no sputtering.
After I drive it for a couple minutes I can turn it off and start with no issues whatsoever.
Other than that, it drives great, MPG is normal, no other issues.
Any ideas?

Got the same problem intermittently with my 87'. However, pumping the pedal and turning to ACC shouldn't do anything on a fuel injected engine. The fuel pump doesnt turn on until the engine is actually spinning. I've always noticed that when mine is hard to start it helps to give it a little throttle too.

I'm hoping this isn't something serious damaging the motor when this happens. I have no idea why pumping the pedal help, but it does, or maybe its just that the pedal is pressed slightly as I start it.

Sounds a little like my 4 runner, the shop mechanics i used to work with have told me it's the EGR valve, but i have yet to hook it to a diagnostic scanner yet to verify it.

I just checked the resistance on the cold start injector. With neg. battery d/c'd and the meter set at 2000 I get 99 or 100 between the 2 terminals.
Can anyone tell me what that means?
