22RE Rough idle problem fixed
#1
Just going to throw this out there because I think it's a common problem. If your 22RE is having trouble idling, there's a couple of things to look for. The first is an EGR valve that's not working properly. My understanding is that this is the most common cause. But in my case, it turned out to be the rubber donuts on the fuel injectors had dry rotted and were leaking air causing the mixture to lean out on one cylinder. What I did was install an EGR delete kit and pull all the injectors to do a rebuild and cleaning with new seals. The idle is much smoother now and I actually had to turn the idle adjustment back down since the idle speed had increased about 400 rpm. (I had cranked the idle up to keep it from stalling prior to doing these repairs.) Next on the list is adjusting the valve lash. Removing the valve cover is going to be much easier without all the EGR garbage piled on top obstructing things.
If you're planning on doing an EGR delete, just be aware that it's not technically difficult. But you're going to be faced with rusty exhaust bolts and a bolt on the back of the cylinder head that's going to increase your vulgar vocabulary. Universal joints, long extensions, and a flexible head ratchet is required. You'll also need to remove the right front wheel to gain access to the reed valve assembly.
