22RE Plug Gap ?

How much spark plug gap should I run ???

My 22RE has an MSD Offroad box, high vibration coil, 8.5 wires and a header.

Thanks, Luc

For your MSD setup (assuming you're running a 6A box or similar version), I was told by an MSD tech to open your gap up from .010 to .015 more then stock (which I believe is .031 or .032 for our 22RE's). I run my gap at about .040

Also, only use standard plugs. Depending on where you live and how warm the ambient temp gets you might want to stay away from platinum plugs too. These plugs can cause pinging as they don't transfer heat away as effective as a standard copper core plug. They last longer but will tend to cause the cylinders to run hotter. An MSD setup raises the temps of the cylinders due to it's multiple sparks. I live in Phoenix AZ and in the summer time it's very hard to combat pinging. I run 91 octane, drop the timing by a degree if need be and I run Bosch Super Plus Plugs with a heat range of 6. This is the coldest plug they make for the 22RE, Part # 7995.

Sweet reply, thanks.

.40 it will be.

I will have to research some more on plug types as I know nothing on how to choose a plug for temperature.

My truck hangs out mainly in Vancouver BC, a lot cooler then down your way.

My timing is set at 5, and I run regular gas, Irridium g power plugs and I get no pinging all all.

Since you're in Vancouver you probably won't have to deal with this as much and if you're not pinging then don't worry. I used to run NGK V groove's but they're only available in one heat range and I couldn't go colder. I switched to Bosch and noticed a decrease in pinging with the colder plug. From what I was told by NAPA, NGK and Denso does they're numbering system backwards from everyone else. The lower the number the hotter the plug, or higher heat range. I run a heat range of 6 with my Bosch, lower = colder, higher = hotter.

I've done a little reading now and from what I have learned my spark plugs are appropriate.

The plugs I removed this morning look like plugs that are of appropriate temp according to NGK's webpage.

Thanks for the replies.

So much to learn and so little time eh !

Have fun out there, Luc
