22re now with terrible mileage

Hello all,

New to the forums. The patient:1993 Pickup, 22re 4x4 157k. in Boulder, CO.

My mileage has gone down to around 10mpg. I did just have my exhaust built up by a local reputable shop (Boulder Muffler), keeping the stock manifold. He used 2.25" pipe. Could there be any correlation there? I never would have thought that the 22re would turn into a gas guzzler from that small of a pipe change.

Also, post exhaust with terrible mileage, check engine light now pops on after 30-40 minutes of driving. I noticed all symptoms on a recent trip to Moab and would like to shake this out before going back out. I'm wondering if the o2 sensor has anything to do with it? Maybe it's fried? perhaps the exhaust guy didn't place it in the right spot on the pipe?

Any help is much appreciated.

Why not check to see if any codes are stored instead of guessing.

I would start with the O2 sensor/wiring and also set up you TPS. If that doesn't help, I would look into your fuel pressure regulator and vacuum line. Then look into you injectors, specifically cold start injector. Also make sure you front brake calipers are not seized up.

O2 sensor should be before the CAT in the mail pipe after the manifold.

Red face

I might ask since you had the exhaust modified has the right foot been used a whole lot more often ??

Good idea to check your code

Maybe your O2 sensor is loose from the exhaust work

Maybe bashed a big dent in your fuel tank
